DHS: New Terror Alert System to be Unveiled

Department of Homeland Security has announced that they will introduce a new Terror Alert System "in the coming days"

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said today that in the coming days he will announce a "new terror alert system" for the United States. "I believe that we need to do a better job of informing the public at large of what we are seeing, removing some of the mystery about the global terrorism threat and what we are doing about it and what we are asking the public to do,” Johnson said. Johnson said the United States has moved into a “new phase” in the global terrorist threat and requires an alert system that can respond appropriately.

Apparently the color-coded system (which I was familiar with) was already replaced, but this new NTAS system hasn't been activated since it depends on "specific credible threat to the homeland" (I thought we've had a number of specific credible threats recently but I guess NOT )

The current National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS), which replaced the old color-coded warning system, has never been activated because it depends on a specific, credible threat to the homeland. Following Johnson's remarks, a DHS official said that this was actually "not a new system." "Earlier this year, Secretary Johnson directed a review of the NTAS to determine how the Department of Homeland Security can more effectively and quickly communicate information to the public and other partners regarding threats to the homeland. This is not a new system. DHS will announce changes to the NTAS in the near future," said the official. "As always, we will adjust security measures, as necessary, to protect the American people to meet a constantly evolving threat picture."

My thoughts when I read the article title:

"The color-coded system must have not been scaring the public as effectively as they had hoped. Now they're amping it up"

And in another matter......Is DHS checking into those 70+ agents that are included in the no-fly list. How can this happen???

As I get older the more I realise how brilliant George Orwell was. I just can't work out how he managed to gain such canny foresight. It has become my favourite of all the novels I have read. Many wondered whether 1984 had staying power as a timeless work of literature, that once the year came and went it would lose its potency. Not so. I wonder if those who call the shots shaping our societies realise just how close to the Big Brother system they are getting?

When I was young I thought 1984 was way over the top. Watching the way our privacy is being eroded through digital socialisation platforms like facebook and our data being stored for the authorities to exploit any time they need an excuse it now seems just one step further into the nightmare, to have this strange control through fear, terrorism being a very convenient and efficient nightmare generator. My own experience has been very Winston like as one who resists.

I will have to read 1984 again. The film is very good, too. Sticks very much to Orwell's novel unusually well for a movie. I think I will get the audiobook this time. Will be good to listen to someone reading it, very entertaining.

Yes, all this post 9/11 stuff is incredibly Orwellian as the state imposes itself on us in every way. Compared to my youth now the state seems so much more powerful and invasive. The younger people will not be able to tell as they have been socialised into it. Those of us on the cusp have got freaky times ahead watching the master plan unfold.

If they are going by recent history, the categories should be;

1. Call them JV
2. Assure everyone is safe
3. Remove 5th and 2nd Amendments
4. Blame congress
5. Draw a red line and wave a white flag

Well it will not be a new system just a change to the current one. Right now since it was created in 2011 it has never been used. The threshold is pretty high on it since they do not want constant alerts making the public apathetic to them. They will now require a little less specific proof before calling an alert but, it will still be a rare thing. So if they do call one people take it serious. Nothing makes a system less effective than crying wolf to often.

It is time for an update... Maybe a more modern color scheme, magenta, cornflower, cumquat... Make it as confusing as buying a pack of American Spirit Smokes, they have like 15 different shades of blue.

Seriously though we already have the Amber Alert System that send an SMS text to your phone to scare you awake at 4AM to let you know Twinkle Twinkie Twilight is missing in Houston. I hope they found little Twinkle alright, as she is an actual child from a message that really woke me up at 4 am. If they can do that it would be nice to know pretty quickly through an SMS that my local town square is being attacked or a dirty bomb just went off in Dallas. There is a good side to having these surveillance assistance devices that we pay to carry around.

It is beautiful in it's design. You have slaves that think they are free, you pay them just enough to live, and then convince them to over pay you for the device and tracking program. Beautiful!
