I don't think there is any hard evidence its much more than a token paramilitary group whose capabilities are grossly over stated to suit The Powers That Should Not Be.

I reckon its a real but token force that enables them to point to and make it out to be a force with world changing capability in the same way they portrayed Osoma Bin Laden to be that too.
