High Chance That 2 Rooms Are Hidden Behind King Tut's Tomb, Egypt Says

90 Percent Chance’ King Tutankhamun’s Tomb Holds a Hidden Chamber: Egypt’s Antiquities Minister

They know something is there; they just don't know how big it is. That's the latest from Egyptian officials who are trying to determine whether Queen Nefertiti's tomb might be hidden behind King Tutankhamun's tomb.

The news came Saturday, as Egypt's minister of antiquities announced the latest findings of a project that's scanning ancient pyramids, in the hope of finding chambers that have remained hidden since the 14th century B.C.

More information will be released over the next few days;

"There is, in fact, an empty space behind the wall based on radar, which is very accurate, there is no doubt. We cannot say at this point however the size of the space behind the wall," Japanese radar specialist Hirokatsu Watanabe said, according to Agence France-Presse. "We have the data but we must analyze it to understand. But we are working in the Valley of the Kings, so we are expecting to find antiquities behind the wall."

"King Tut's" tomb, as well as his death mask, according to researchers, was most likely intended to be Nefertiti's, but his untimely death led to his "hurried" burial in her mausoleum. The team has speculated that the hidden passages may lead to her hidden tomb.

No, hopefully it hasn't been looted in Antiquity, and is filled with rich peoples gold, who buried it so nobody else could get it.

We better explore it before they bulldoze the pyramids...not a good year to be an ancient wonder in the Middle East...just sayin

I'd imagine the whole base of the pyramid is underground tunnels. When they first tried building pyramids they would end up with problems with tilting, sinking and cracking of the foundations. It would make sense to have a built-in inspection system that could be blocked up later on.

just knock the wall down already why are they delaying i see no point in dragging it out ,they think something is there so just smash it open and have a look

Do you think if something interesting is in there we will hear about it?

If something was in there will they be able to get it without destroying wall art etc?

They're not likely to destroy the priceless art on the wall just to smash their way through it. No reason to disturb any of the walls in Tut's tomb, they can get to the other side of the wall in question from another direction.

If a cover-up were in the works then the initial announcement of a discovery would not likely have ever been made (IMO).

Anybody aware of an update? The article I read it stated they would release information the Thursday after the original statement...

The most that I've found, though was recently more recently than the initial plan of the Thurs announcement;

“We said earlier there was a 60 percent chance there is something behind the walls. But now after the initial reading of the scans, we are saying it’s 90 percent likely there is something behind the walls,” Egyptian Antiquities Minister Mamdouh al-Damaty told reporters.

It may be a while until more is known, guessing they want to fully confirm the presence of the rooms before opening the walls. A likely seam to one of the said rooms can be seen in the high resolution images that were released as of recent- see images here

He said he expected to reach the other side of the tomb’s wall within three months.

I think they're waffling because the results really aren't that astonishing after all (in other words, I think that they found a small space and not the large rooms that are usual with such tombs)

This behavior is typical when someone announces BEFORE the fact that they've found something (Cleopatra's tomb, the last time Reeve "found" Nefertiti, etc, etc.) They'll quit mentioning it and seize on something new, hoping folks will forget it. And usually the public does forget it.

Maybe they know it's now safe to mention it, cause they already checked. How can Neffertiti be behind if she died later? Must be another entrance somewhere else!!

I tend towards this thought as well, but I propose that it may be due to the fear of terrorist attacks on the tomb if it was confirmed.

I'm worried about that at least.

I thought the article said that his tomb was meant for her, but his unexpected death meant they had to use her tomb for him.

They do talk about a false door in his tomb or something. Maybe all the false doors in all the tombs have something behind them.

No, hers would have been the most recent royal tomb and then he died seven years after her unexpectantly, so in the emergency they had no other option. Usually the location of the tomb died with the priests. So if he is in there, her priests would still have been alive. The Egyptians believed that the spirit of the dead had a time limit to leave their body and pass over, so they didn't have time to build a new tomb, I can't remember the exact time limit, I think there was a 7 in it lol, 70 days, 7 weeks, something like that, Byrd will know...

The Egyptians always put a false door on the west wall of a tomb as they believed the underworld was to the west (the direction of sunset), so the spirit was the only one who could pass through it. It was a spiritual door only. In cases of entombed couples, there were two doors, his and hers

Well said. It's what i was thinking that maybe they found just that, small storage rooms as first talked of. That maybe empty, no word on anything 'pinging back'(if that's the word/possible to do so)about things being in the rooms from the readings.

A terrorist attack on the tomb is pretty unlikely. I was there in October, and the regular security for the area is very strict (mainly to keep crowd control and keep people from damaging things.) The actual tomb is underground and it'd take someone getting inside it to damage it (an attack above the ground would do very little to it.) Right now, it's closed (and has been closed for some time. There was a proposal to build a replica of the tomb right next to it so that everyone could see the tomb without damage to the real one (they only open 3-4 tombs at any one time, and unless you have special permission and arrangements you won't get to see a particular tomb. And you can't photograph.

It would also be pointless AND would be dangerous for the group attempting to cause harm -- they would not win any supporters (whatever supporters they had would turn against them) and would be hunted down at every turn.

Tourism is the biggest economic engine there. Some people have seen their incomes drop as much as 90% ever since the revolution. Tourists are just coming back and attacks like the one on the Russian tourist plane in Sinai are seen as a threat to the welfare of everyone in the country.

An update on the EFF electronic group yesterday contains some news stories about this. Reeves is still passionately convinced that Nefertiti is there, but Watanabe sounds much less convinced. He admits there's a space but thinks it's not a corridor or a tomb chamber
