This week, they turned into Ethical hackers, revealing ISIS recruiters. But who are Anonymous, it sounds stupid, but no one knows who they are.

That is more than likely what they want. Good on them.

Anon can be anyone. But a major part of it could be Chinese, I would guess. That's where Assange had meetings, that's where there is one of the biggest concentration of hackers in the World, and that's where the ip addresses of some Anonymous attacks have been traced.

Anons are every where. Think that scene in fight club.., an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Anons are in every country. Anons never make a collective decision, people always disagree. Many times one group of Anons work to undermine or show up other groups. It's people who want change and people who want to destroy. It's a beautiful convoluted representation of society except that anonymity brings out the best and worst as they may fight for good as self styled super heroes who ask for no applause or as villians who can destroy lives or businesses and then go about their business without having to feel shame.

My opinion of course.

Edit: obviously not all anons are white collar. They come from all incomes and backgrounds as well.

Anonymous can be anyone, and thats their power I wouldn't worry about what sort of proxy exit node they come out of to try and work out where they live etc but accept that it could be an Indian guy hacking a US server to reveal something thanks to the help of a French lady but no one knows who the hell they are.

Anon is more a mindset than an actual group in my opinion. There is no headquarters, there are no members, there is no direct objective, it just is.

I think Anonymous exists to motivate the people to call for tightening of internet restrictions. They act like the good guys, but I get the feeling they're crouched behind Joe Public, just waiting for a little push.

I do agree, if I had to guess where most of the members where from I too would've said China.

Im sure they have many reasons. Maybe if you think ISIS is Western funding it would be a waste of time going after them..

I've always respected them. Digging for the unknown.
Had a good chuckle at the Ashley Madison dump which left a couple people a little hot under the collar.
Be interesting to see how their internal structures work.

Not so much these days, but in the mid to late 2000's, up until 2011, I was in touch with quite a few people around the world who were involved in Anonymous, as I was too. I was involved in a couple of events which were reported by mainstream media - nothing too dramatic or anything.

The media depicts Anonymous like a sort of organised group, like some sort of elite club, but in reality it's nothing like that. For instance, the recent attacks on the Islamic State's Twitter feeds and social media outlets etc, weren't the result of organised planning. Basically, the message was put out around various places like 4chan, Dvach, 8chan, IRC channels etc, and whoever happens to have the desire and ability to contribute will do so. No central organisation; just random people all over the world.

I knew a couple of them in person, and every now and then we'd catch up and some activity of Anonymous would come up in conversation and we'd both already be aware of what was going on, before it got put in action or reported by mainstream media, despite not having ever discussed it online. All we did was frequent the same places on the internet, hear the same messages, and respond if we felt like it. Anonymous has more in common with a sort of internet culture than with a special select group.

That being said, there are a few people who sort of band together as an actual group, but those are the extreme minority and any and all of them can fall under the Anonymous umbrella. So despite the paintings of the media, Anonymous is definitely not like some sort of internet based Illuminati or whatever.
