Probably nothing more that solar winds stripped the atmosphere billions of years ago... buzz kill

Here we go again...... The excitement levels are so mismatched.

"Massive" announcement, that gets astronomers excited :

Di hydrogen monoxide in liquid form found on body X where none was previously detected,

"Massive" announcement, that gets ATS excited :

Alien city discovered.

A massive massive discovery would be life, no matter how small, discovered anywhere except on Earth. That discovery would change everyone's perspective of our existence, from the extremely religious to the ultra skeptical scientist. Needless to say, any announcement would have to be 100% verifiable, checked gadzillions of times, cross referenced so many times that the conspiracist shouts "cover-up". The effects are too profound for any mistake to be made.

Probably nothing really significant.

It's all about the hype. And they need more funding, so ... yeah.

God is my witness I hope I am wrong, but not letting hype get me. Too many disappointments ...

You mean like aiming for crowd funding?

Yep, gotta love how many ATS posters do zero research, and quickly jump to stereoptypical conclusions.

They are going to announce that the atmosphere is breathable.
2nd.

Strangely I was thinking the same thing

I'm almost willing to bet it has to do with water vapor in the atmosphere, the fact that Mars lost most atmosphere due to a meteor strike and following chaos after which stripped it of the remaining atmosphere due to loss of magnetic field and solar winds....

But then, I don't know what I am talking about.

Filling in Mars history,
even if people don't think it is important,
I love to hear all of it.

I don't think many people are expecting them to announce life soon.
It's fun to speculate.

YA know what id love to see happen. A alien walks up to th erover and shows a family picture album and send copies to everyone on the planet at one time. and then they say your governments have know about u s a long time. were coming by next thursday night to watch the football game. then afterwards making a tour of all the planet. Bring the kids. cal in sick to work. we dont mind. later. then walks off.

Now imagine the panic 30 seconds later. Glorious to say th e least.

Sadly, it will most probably be just another tedious boring conference. But hey, you give me hope

50p says they have found a rock shaped like Kim Kardashiwhatevers bum.

Or, given the team lineup, something to do with the atmosphere....probably richer in something or other than previously though, but still of absolutely no use for anything.

If they found rocks that lumpy and large on Mars, I think that would be newsworthy enough.

As for the rest... Atmospheric, yes, but "of absolutely no use for anything"... Doubtful. Maybe they've been able to approximate when Mars lost most of its atmosphere. If that's it, it would go a really long way in advancing Mars science.

This should be starred 100 times.

Or *thumbed down* 100 times.

These anouncements of anouncements are needed to organise a press conference, to give more public exposure to all the important scientific work these agencies and organisations are doing, and to combat ignorance such as present in this and many other ATS threads. But I guess the ignorant will want to continue wallowing in their ignorance and scoffing at any such anouncements and published results. Each to their own, I guess.

Personally, I'm glad they anounced this anouncement. I'm interested in Mars' planetary history and how it lost most of its atmosphere, so I will keep an eye on what they're going to reveal.

It's the scheduling of a press conference; not an "announcement" about the announcement.

If NASA has planned a press conference, do you think they should not mention the conference, and instead just have the conference without putting it on a schedule? If they did that, how would the press know to show up for it, or how would the public know to watch it?
