i just installed linux mint last night. so far i have not tweaked too much. just a few settings.
if youre running mint is there anything you would recommend? any tips?
anything at al really.

im not a total newb but still very much a novice user. i ran unbuntu before but it never did run right. that comp was already having problems before i installed it. over heating and such.

mint seems to be much easier to use. terminal is at the ready.
vlc works great.
transmission is very smooth. i have not looked through the software center yet but i will tonight.
just looking for anything that can be helpful.

thanks

Don't forget to load PlayOnLinux great for any home use linux machine regardless of distro.
(Lets you run windows native games and software without having to use VMWare)

Download Chromium browser - it's the freeware version of Chrome. It runs way faster than Firefox etc.

Mint is a solid distro, I've been using it for about 4 years now and have found it very user friendly.

These days with the size of drives etc and automatic updates its a lot harder to seriously tweak it unless you want to get into the compiling your own kernel, now at that point you need to seriously understand every option you get asked to yes or no and then theres the fact that you'll be responsible for compiling all your own updates probably from that point onwards...a knowledge of C/C++ and makefiles is also a good idea

I recommend having another access point to the internet, because you will need to consult forums to learn. The only problem I encountered was easily fixed by selecting the proper drivers for my video card. Once that was done everything else was a breeze.

I have installed Linux on two of my PCs and even my wife approves.

Good luck!

My usual installation extras are: xine, video codecs (divx), guvcview (for making timelapse videos), me-tv and w-scan (for a digital-TV USB dongle). There's the atari800 emulator (for running old titles), SDL for game development, Qt for applications development. That's about everything I can think of.
