Aerostat ‘blimp’ owned by U.S. Army comes untethered from Maryland base

This is a trip to me. How in the world do you lose a $2.7 billion blimp? Ask the US Army.

A massive aerostat owned by the U.S. Army came untethered from its base in Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Wednesday morning, and police are now warning nearby citizens to keep their distance and call 911 if they see it.

It's difting toward Pennsylvania and pulling about 6,700 feet of cable with it, officials said.

I spent a few years in another town next to a base with a very similar blimp. Took a field trip to it once and we got to see the operations, especially raising the blimp early in the morning and attaching the mooring to it. How badly does someone have to mess up to accomplish losing it? Very badly.

Last I heard, they've scrambled a few F-16's to take this thing down somewhere safe.
