You'd be wise not to touch pigs, they're likely to bite your hand straight off and devour it. It has nothing to do with them being unfit for food or sacrifice.

Very true, but both Leviticus and Deuteronomy say their dead carcasses cannot be touched. It's the only animal listed that cannot be touched even when it's dead.

Jews had nothing whatsoever to do with swine. Furthermore, they NEVER used pigs for sacrifice, that would have been an abomination. That's the blasphemous act that set off the Macabbean revolt. Antiochus IV Epiphanies sacrificed a pig on the brazen altar and that was the last straw, the Jews rose up and defeated the Seleucid Empire. The re-dedication and purifying of the temple is the reason Hanukkah is celebrated to this day.

Your Leviticus quote says not to touch any dead unclean animals, and shows us how they can spot if an animal is unclean, clean animals must have split hoofs and chew the cud. Pigs have split hoofs, but they don't «chew the cud» hence it is among the unclean animals (together with horses, humans and rabbits). Pigs are also very closely related to humans, so they carry quite a few diseases that can transmit to humans. Similar food hygiene (as kosher practice) laws were common all over the Middle East, the Greeks and the Arabs, Assyrians etc. they had similar laws. They understood that they were much less likely to catch diseases if they stuck to what they to be considered clean or safe-to-eat and fit-for-sacrifice animals, and left the dog and the pig and the horse to do their thing as they were not fit for food.

Okay, but like I said, they didn't eat them, they didn't touch their dead carcasses, and they didn't raise them. The herd of pigs was for the temple sacrifices for Zeus. Jews had nothing to do with swine.

Bollocks. Horses are unclean too. Donkeys. Camels. Humans. Rabbits. They kept all of these. Why wouldn't they keep pigs? You were not allowed to touch anything unclean which is dead, if you did you'd be unclean, like how there are separate laws for handling human corpses. Humans are unclean so you would have to see the doctor about a dog if let's say you helped bury a person.

Sorry, you're talking pure poppy cock about Leviticall law and Hebrew culture. They had absolutely nothing to do with pigs. They didn't raise them, eat them, touch them, or have anything to do with them at all.

Lots of Jews did things to/for pagans that they weren't allowed to do to/for Jews, like enslave war captives, loan money on interest and sell pigs, rabbits and chickens to eat or sacrifice.

Second, Jews of this era kept the dietary laws of kashut (kosher) more strictly than today.

Yet the gospel account says that the Gerasenes were raising pigs, which the Jews among them shouldn't eat according to Jewish law. This reality raises lots of questions that the text doesn't answer. For instance, was food so scarce then that the Gerasenes would break sacred food laws in order to have sustenance?

Or were they raising pigs to feed the hated Roman occupiers?

You forget that Judea was a Roman province, and part of the Roman Empire-- and the law they were under was the Roman one. Most people in a society are secular, and Judea had plenty salt works, so they had everything needed to prepare and store pork meat as clean as kosher. Kosher pig, anyone?

There you go, putting words in my mouth. I said that it was NOT against "The Law" to raise unclean animal to sell to pagans, loan them money on interest or enslave them after invading their villages....not that they ate bacon.

There was a market for pigs and all of the other sacrificial animals; (butcher shops in the Temple basements) that being the feeding of the occupying Romans.

Pork was probably cheap and there was probably easy access. The Romans were and are good at making food of pork.
