You're right, I really dislike Carson and am a huge supporter of Bernie but I promise you that if Bernie did this, I wouldn't be voting for him.

Why would you not vote for Bernie Sanders if he wrote a book and took two weeks off from campaigning to promote it?
Why is that bad?

Maybe he would feel a book would get his message out to more people.

I honestly can't believe and don't understand how this is a question.

As I mentioned, if this was already arranged by the publisher, he has to honor his commitments, possibly an enforceable contract.

publishingguru.blogspot.com...

Publishers that pay authors advances often expect the author to use these funds to promote the book. They expect the advance to be used for travel and book tours.

Also, how is it taking time off to do a book tour? He is still going to be out glad-handing and meeting people even if won't be exclusively in primary states.

Call it grass roots campaigning.

C'mon, OP...admit it. You saw this story and thought you might twist it into an opportunity to try to bash Dr. Carson.

It's just a story about a candidate who has written a book and is taking two weeks away from the campaign trail to do a book tour over a year before the election.

It's okay to be partisan. Most of us are...but your efforts to bend your faux outrage like a pretzel...in order to fit a benign story about a candidate you dislike...is ridiculously obvious.

Hey! Did you see? Hillary is suspending her campaign to go testify on Capital Hill.

It amounts to the same thing. Satisfying a legal obligation.

No... this is honestly repugnant to me. It would be no matter who did it. If I were all about just writing hit pieces I could do 20 threads a day with what the GOP provides as fodder.

Is this a joke? Carson is suspending his campaign for his book?? This is almost comical...

How seriously does he take the office of the presidency? Does he intend to suspend his presidency as well for book tours?

This has been planned for a while. I've seen the events come over my desk. It was orchestrated with his publisher and the various stores he's going to be at.

The time won't be wasted.

Makes no sense. His political campaign is marketing for his book. He doesn't NEED a book tour. Book tours are for authors with no other marketing.

Nobody of his stature makes a book deal without the publishers orchestrating a promotional book tour. It would have been written into the original contract. I speak from experience. This is business as usual and actually a very good opportunity to get his message out to the public.

Book tours are status quo for any book by anyone of any stature, from cookbook to novel to sports book to whatever you want. The author's name is the marketing.

I work for a small company that produces the promotional materials for a major book store chain. Every author who has any name recognition at all does appearances to promote their book. Hillary did it. Warren did it. Carson is doing it. The only difference between Carson and the first two is that his promotional tour happens to be scheduled during the presidential run and he happens to have momentum. There was no reason at all when this was scheduled to think things would be as they are.

I believe Carson is going to drop out of the race anyway.

And as far as Jeb is concerned, I heard from a fairly reliable source that Jeb is thinking about dropping out as well. That was a shocker to me.

You're right to an extent. Since he's already going to be doing those book tours/appearances anyway, why not just have that as part of his campaign. Publicly saying your suspending your campaign is a bad idea. It sends a bad message, when no message at all needed to be sent.

He keeps, recently coming across as a not very smart guy. Not sure I would want him as president. That and he doesn't believe in evolution. We can't have someone that anti science in the white house!

I felt the same way at this bit of news.

Would he suspend his Presidency if he wrote another book while in the WH?

I agree with the OP and I supported Carson's campaign. Now I want a refund!

Maybe they told him this was decided a long time ago. Jeb is getting the nomination. Now, how will they make Trump go away.

That is the rub, isn't it? No way the RNC would even put him (Trump) as a VP choice (not that he'd take it), because they want Rubio as VP for the Hispanic vote.

Yet, if Trump goes independent, it will bleed off voters, ensuring a Hillary win. They really don't have a way to make him go away, even if he doesn't go indy. I guess they're hoping the conservative voters will come back to the GOP and vote for Bush, but I know I won't.

I think Carson knows he isn't going to get the GOP nod, but he's in it for a cabinet position at this point. (which won't matter as the GOP candidate can't win). Trump is the only one that will have a decent shot at it, and even that is iffy, but the RNC will never choose him.

Agreed. Pretty stupid decision to word it that way.

Carson should suspend his campaign indefinitely.... we already have enough quacks in the GOP.

I get the feeling he wants a parachute and a backup plan in case his campaign goes south. He's going to need to sell books, right?

In some ways I've been wondering if this entire time he's been playing everyone. Perhaps his bid for POTUS is just a way to get exposure and name recognition?

If his campaign drops off, he'll most likely get TV offers to be a "medical expert" on FOX or something now. He's going to sell more books than he ever thought possible now that everyone wants to see what's in it...

As another mentioned, this book tour was no doubt already agreed to, etc. The dumb part is stating what he did about the campaign. It simply didn't need to be said.

As for Trump being "shady"...he pretty much did already release the records.

I don't think Ben's dealings are necessarily "shady" either...just poor choice of words in the press release.
