Ebola nurse Pauline Cafferkey 'critically ill' after condition deteriorates

I am surprised no one has popped this one back up. This is the second day it's been circulating mainstream.

Cafferkey was flown from Scotland, where she lives, to London for specialised care in an isolation tent at the Royal Free after she fell ill last week. Her family said the local medical staff were slow to realise this was a recurrence of the infection she had successfully fought last year.

This nurse was critically ill with Ebola before and fought it off. Now it seems she has it again. We've had reports of the virus lingering in various places in the body like in the eyeballs and semen.

But she is the first person to have a known re-occurrence of her infection.

While there have been reports of the virus lingering in the eyes of survivors and of transmission through semen, Cafferkey is the first person known to have a life-threatening recurrence of Ebola viral disease – though it is entirely possible that other survivors in west Africa may have fallen ill in the same way but without coming to public attention.

This is troubling. It's possible this is one way the virus pops up from time to time. It simply incubates in a survivor and waits for the immune system to be compromised and take its opportunity. Or, and this is the doom porn scenario, this is novel and her strain of the virus is a potential new mutation.

According to the article she is not showing the classic symptoms of Ebola that would make this infectious in ways it is known to be infectious - severe vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding - so maybe this is an isolated thing. I hope so, and I hope she gets better.

Put a feather in my tin foil hat. The one known person to have such a recurrence isn't among those living in/native to Sierra Leone or any of the other hard hit areas.

Yes when I was looking for it the first time, I missed it. Saw the thread on the second look after posting.

But that was an early story before they disclosed fully what was up.

Interesting that they caught this considering her symptoms ( or lack of ). I saw a blip on Twitter about studies showing Ebola is transmissible through semen for months "studies confirm". I thought this had already been confirmed.

All very curious considering we haven't heard much of it lately. Now this.

This is very disturbing. I feel sorry for the poor woman, the first round was bad enough. Logically her body should have developed antibodies to fight off the infection; but what if this is indeed a mutation (as you said)?

I really hope this remains an isolated incident.

Glad you need direct contact with bodily fluids to get it, except in the many cases in the recent outbreak where you don't. I still think this outbreak is going to lead to a whole bunch more. Massive pandemic? Probably not, but cases popping up all over the world... I'm leaning toward yes, while hoping I'm wrong.
