Successful trial of India's 'Pinaka'

India's own multibarrel rocket system 'Pinaka' underwent a successful trial at the Proof and Experimental Establishment (PEE) test range at Chandipur, about 15 km from here this afternoon.

'Pinaka' which has undergone several tests since 1995 is in its advanced stage of development, PEE sources said.

"The first phase of user's trial has been successfully completed by the Indian army which has suggested some improvements on which the Research and Development wing of the defence is working now", the sources said.

The sophisticated Pinaka is an area weapon system aimed at supplementing the existing artillery guns at a range beyond 30 km and provide an edge to the army during low intensity warlike conditions.

The unguided rocket system, which was testfired today, was meant to neutralise a bigger geographical area with its rapid salvo of rockets.

Having a range of 39 km, Pinaka can fire a salvo of 12 rockets within 44 seconds. One salvo fired from the battery of six launchers could neutralise a target area of 3.9 sq km at a time.

When fitted with different types of warheads, Pinaka is rendered deadly as it could even destroy the enemy's solid structures and bunkers, the sources said.

Nice post man I think it would be cool if the us developed this for it's new littoral combat ships.

Its sad that less than a week after one of the worst disasters in history, one of the effected countries is testing rockets....

Same country which has refused all foreign aid and has itself sent assistance to ailing nations like Srilanka and Indonesia. Same country which is the only one out of the tsunami stricken ones to be included in th US propounded "core group". This group is to co-od and oversee all relief ops. I think you give this country a little less credit than it deserves..

Proof and Experimental Establishment's designation is PXE, not PEE, for both the Indian and the Australian defense institutions...
