a reply to: BIGPoJo Just goes to show how little time we may have.
Two days notice? could they even launch bombs at it in this time?.
Not saying bombs would work but still.

That's a no-no as even if it is destroyed, it just means more peices will probably hit.

I notice it's The Express again, see my reply to this thread.

Would not the smaller pieces burn up when they entered our atmosphere?

2000 FL10 means it was discovered in 2000.

No, it was discovered on July 16,1999. It was entered into the NEO catalog in 2000 once the first sigma calculations determined it's orbit. They were very close early on.
The headlines and quotes here are not only unnecessary, but wrong. There is no "Shock" here, and it has a closest point of approach at 66 lunar distances. That is not even remotely scary.

I found this on Facebook.

Couldn't find anything on it. Can anyone tell me what it is?

Makes me think of that Mother Shipton Prophecy.

"A fiery dragon will cross the sky Six times before this earth shall die"

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.

It doesn't matter. I think it's a hoax anyways.

So all those people who go to launches and take launch trail photos are lying?

I mean, if we can land a rocket on a comet....

Why wouldnt we be able to nuke an asteroid?

A nuclear explosion in the vacuum of space? I can see that knocking it well off its course.

Probably not as the asteroid will weigh a few 10's of millions of tons.

DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just paid my Amex card..... knew I should have Charlie Sheen'ed it this weekend!!!!

I agree, doom porn makes me a nervous wreck, so if it were true. I would get into my prescription of Xanax and vintage champagne, with a hot tub full of hot women, well just bring it on. I would make ole Charlie proud. The song said " it's the end of the world and we know it."

This just hows how easily people are led by such headlines, and this is what's worrying. Never mind asteroids, we might see hundreds of thousands of deaths from a global war that was orchestrated with such use of headlines, where people don't stop to think and to do a bit of research.

Anyway, here's a video that popped up in my Youtube subscriptions, and it seems to be on topic.

www.youtube.com...

The media is hyperventilating this week over asteroid (86666) 2000 FL10. It is an interesting asteroid at a huge 2.6 klm wide. It is not a "surprise", it has not been "just announced", the minor planet center have been tracking it for 15 years, and its not going to "just miss the earth" ...... its a long way away. But it is interesting due to its large size.

It also has an interesting number which should raise some eyebrows.

'86' means something is gone, or cut out, in restaurant and other parlance. Thus, this asteroid is taking out the devil, thereby eliminating all Satan-related doom. Thanks asteroid!

Not really, nukes are very weak in space, as most of their destruction comes from the shockwave that wont exist in vacuum.

It would have to be drilled into it to do anything.

Nukes are not ever going to save us from a meteor hit.

Not quite true. Here's what they would do. There is known work on altering thermonuclear weapons to enhance x-ray generation as a means for missile defense (as in been manufactured and tested successfully, W-71---note I'm not talking about a nuclear pumped x-ray laser which has not worked).

It would be tricky but possible; one would have to match velocities closely with the asteroid and detonate the device as it floats maybe one to two radii off of the asteroid. The x-rays would heat and ablate (burn off) a layer in the asteroid and the momentum from the ablation would alter the course of the asteroid.

Now this is a risky approach. If you had a significantly longer head-start, then it would be better to land some ion engines on the asteroid and turn them on for a few months or year so you could precisely measure and control the thrust to maximize the effectiveness with the minimal chance of causing a breakup or unpredictable effect or course correction.
