Taliban take Key Afghan city of Kunduz

Reports that the Taliban stormed the city before dawn and quickly took over key buildings , the Afghan government says it has sent reinforcements to the area although unconfirmed statements say the Taliban are in control but fighting continues.
The city is important as it's a transport hub for the north of the country , it's also significant as it was the Taliban northern stronghold before they were removed by the coalition.

"With the capturing of the police compound and governor's office in Kunduz, the whole province fell to our hands and our fighters are now advancing towards the airport," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on his Twitter account.

A Taliban statement called the operation in Kunduz "an immense conquest" and urged their fighters to protect the local population.
The statement said the government in Kabul "should openly admit its defeat".
Earlier, the government admitted that it had lost control of parts of the city. It said at least 25 militants and two Afghan policemen had been killed and that reinforcements had been dispatched.

Yeah right.................. A campaign based on 'hearts and minds' in Afghanistan was never going to eliminate the Taliban. Brits, Ruskies, Yanks all failed in Afghanistan. They are different, they have their own culture and way of life. We've just got to let them get on with it, maybe keeping the option of targeted killings and special ops against any Al Quiyida groups there.

The US took over most of Afghanistan with ease. The problem was changing their mind set after the Taliban were forced into Pakistan.. The real issue is these folks are not ready for a new era, they are very tribal and really have the mentality of people from several hundred/thousand years ago. That place will suck for another hundred years or more. We will be living on Mars and likely there will be mountain tribes still buggering boys and sheep, while beating their wives for trying to read. Someone said, you can't bomb them back to the stone age because that's where they are. Its not too far off.

Actually that's not quite correct. Afghanistan during the 50s-70s was extremely westernised and a very funky place to be.
It always surprises people when they learn that Kabul was about as hip as they come and a definite stop on the hippie trail (I know coz I did it lol)

They were forced backwards by the Taliban and its very sad to see. Most of the women now can only imagine how free their grandmothers were, they on the other hand will probably never experience it

That's a sad statement to have to make as well when most everywhere else its the opposites that our children are better off than ourselves. All that work for naught...policies have failed....not that the war was making much difference but at least we were able to provide some security for those who wished for change and now they have been abandoned once again. Its no wonder they harbor so much ill will toward much of the world...Land of the Lost

Lets see, we had the Taliban expressly funded by the US to stop the Russian aggression. They begat Al Qeada . Obama pulled the troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan so fast hey actually left their weapons , vehicles , and equipment there.This begat ISIS. Now we see a reemergence of the Taliban . Plus now we have a Russian buildup in Syria supposedly to assist in combating ISIS. The US doing next to nothing about any of these situations . But they condemn the Russians for at least attempting to secure Syria from ISIS....

Gee , I lost track... hurts...

Oh , I forgot about the Iran farce. Whos side are they on again ?

Afghan forces are currently mounting a fightback to try and retake the city with the US providing airpower.

In a televised address on Tuesday, he said "progress" was being made recapturing Kunduz but security forces had been hampered by the Taliban using civilians as human shields.
"The government of Afghanistan is a responsible government and it cannot bomb its people and compatriots inside the city and will not do so," he said.
Heavy casualties had been inflicted on "the enemy", he added, although this was denied by the Taliban.
US military planes have supported the operation, striking Taliban positions on the outskirts of the city, a Nato spokesman said.
