Magazines/newpapers Children shouldn't see..

When I was a kid I use to go straight to the Magazine rack when my mother went shopping and looked at the video game guides. One time when I went there (I was about 10-11 years old) I seen this newspaper or some kind of Magazine that had a big creepy picture of a alien and it said something about being captured.. It really freaked me out and I had nightmares every night for a week, and I would never look up in the sky when it was dark out incase i'd see something that would scare the daylights out of me..
But that passed on and I continued to go to the usual Magazine rack each week but this time,I put another magazine on top the alien so it wouldn't scare me. It wasn't that bad. But as the weeks went on,so did the production of new Magazines, with titles like: "Heaven Found" "Jesus returns" and "2000 the end of the world?" etc..etc.. These also scared the crap outta me and it made me feel depressed and scared.
I think these crazy Magazines and Newspaper should be harder to reach and not just laying around. I think these Magazines/Newspapers could make a huge effect on a child, especially the ones with the big imagination.

I'm sure some of you know the names/type of these magazines/newspapers.

What do you guys think?

I never thought of that. The grocery store where I shop has plastic blockers that it puts in front of the magazines like "Cosmo" and the like, that might show some cleavage. I had to laugh once when a bridal magazine was blocked. Must have been a low-cut gown.

A lot of the tabloids also have violence on the front cover. But in the grand American tradition, they block the "dirty" sensual material and leave the good clean violence and scary stuff in view.

Plastic blockers.. That's a good idea, but there is nothing like that around here. My town anyway. (Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia)

I used to be scared about the world ending in the year 2000 too.

They put porn on the top shelf and these tabloids on the bottom. What they need is to put stuff in an order. Something like:

Shelf 1 (Bottom): Nick Magazine, ect.
2: Interior Design
3: Computers, Videogames
4: Bridal
5: Sports
6: Tabloids
7: Porn

If's in the Sun, Weekly World News, Star, etc, 9 out of 10 times it's gonna be fake.

If kids can' t stop for a moment and actually think these things through, that's their problem, and their parents problem.

True... But it's kinda the same when children have nightmares from the scary things in movies. You can tell the child that its not real, explain whats going on in the movie but still s/he could still be frightened. Yes it is the children/parent's problem for watching a movie that is rated A,R..etc.. But they can't rent them. But they can see something like "Sun" or "Weekly World News" casually walk up and purchase it and have the weak minds poisioned in fear.

This may sounds stupid, but just an opinion. Please don't flame me.

How about parents being parents and teaching their kids the difference between what is real and what is make believe and made up. When I was a kid, I wasn't hidden from things, and if I saw something that was violent, etc, it was quickly explained to me that it was make believe and not real...And you know what? I think I grew up pretty normal :-)

I guess I had bad parents.

The one thing I remember about Weekly World News is Batboy.

I'm trying to figure out why Batboy seems to be popular among some people....

Hahaha, I remember batboy! I think that was the only one that did not freak me out. lol, goodtimes.

I wasn't trying to imply that anyone's parents were bad. My previous post was worded badly.

What I was getting at is instead of having stores hide magazines like the Sun and Weekly World News, they should sit down with their kids, and explain why stories in those are usually not to be believed.

Just because parents don't do that, doesn't mean they're bad parents. I've met a lot of adults who haven't even looked at one of those magazines, so it never crossed their minds that their kids might, and that it might scare them.

Weekly World News is mostly humor, but once in a while, its worth reading. There was a conspiracy issue a while back that I was so impressed with I actually bought it. Those conspriacies, which were valid (such as Illuminati, JFK, Moon Landling, ect), plus my previous extraterrestrial encounter, led me to Google "conspiracies" and sent me to ATS.

Heh... I think Batboy is an inside joke among journalism buffs, in the same way that the expression "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" is an inside joke among video game fans, or "_____ is teh suck" is an inside joke among Internet bloggers. Batboy was hilarious because it was badly faked, even by Weekly World News standards.
