Where do I go if I have an idea?

I agree. All these leg up organisations are there for a couple of reasons,1. to earn money off your back and 2. to filter out the more important inventions.
If it was an important invention or devise do not under any circumstances go for a patent. The patent office is also twofold, 1, they'll give you a patent if your invention is not very earth shattering. Yes it might earn you millions.
But if your invention was important enough say to upset the balance of the power people (say you invented a zero energy device that really worked) the government would put a block on your application. Strike one, from that point on you've lost your invention because they will not allow you to upset their balance.
Strike two, to get a patent you must submit a detailed plan and explaination on how your invention works. That then is in the system and you'll find that someone has accidentally invented your exact device 10 years before you, probably someone with more power and money than you.
Only patent when you really, really have to. Try not to go for the big kohuna straight away but build up slwly through the grass roots, but still try to keep the most essencial parts secret.

Correct. Many an idea, project, song or movie....pips up seemingly out of nowhere after being discussed for supposedly the first time.

Actually...I own a few trademarks and copyrights as well. Always...hold your original ideas closely.
