Very interesting. But what about the breeding of the females from another poster, that they don't live long after. They could not compete with us on that point.

it could always be worse. Consider the poor blue ringed octopus. Due to an unfortunate translation error the octopian phrase: "leave me alone i am extremely deadly." gets understood by humans as the humanoid phrase: "puuuurty! i want to pet him and squeeze him and hug him and name him george!"

I was once taken to the back room of a zoo aquarium, and there met their resident octopus. Looking into her eyes was like looking into a human's eyes, she was totally there and intelligently present. She then was given a closed clear container with food inside, which she opened without the least effort, just like a person opening a large screwed-on bottle top. They are wonderful creatures.
