When a statue sits in a church for a couple or 700 years, it eventually can turn black from the constant exposure to candle soot. That's it, that's
why they're black, nothing supernatural here.
No. There is worship of the Black Madonna in Europe, which is also a large part of the gypsy tradition, but was once largely popular in the Catholics
of the mediterranean regions. (in the 11th and 12th century).
Statues
painted black are still often found in fields, where people used to bury them to protect and bless their crops. They are still in many
Catholic churches here, such as the Basilica Montserrat, in Barcelona.
For the Catholics of the middle ages, it was a symbol of Mary Magdalen, believed to have been the wife of Jesus, who came to South France after the
ascension of Christ, with two other women, and lived out her life there. For the gypsies, who still celebrate each year in St. Maries de la Mer, she
is the symbol of Sara, supposed to be one of the two women who accompanied Mary, a young girl. (Sara la noire, or Sara la Kali). She is traditionally
believed to have been from Egypt, and was a servant to the to Mary's.
She is largely another icon that was incorporated into Christianity from earlier belief systems. Thus the reference to Kali of the hindus.
Many years ago we rented a large barge and travelled around the canals of South France visiting many churches that have black madonnas. I assure you
they are not black because of candle soot. Some have faces and hands made of black marble, some are paintings (candle soot would make all the painting
black, not just one character). We've taken part in the festival at St. Maries de la Mer.
I personally do not get too concerned about who she was exactly, it is simply a symbol of the feminine force, the Yin, which is the opposite of the
masculine force, and so black is appropriate for that symbol.
There are belief systems in which darkness is not "evil" but feminine - the darkness of the womb, darkness of night and rest, of potential for
creation and change, the earth, fertility. There used to be more value on that before the worship of masculine grew to such exaggeration as to
consider the feminine as evil.
