Anyone excited for this game?

For those who haven't heard about it:

NMS is a procedurally (but not randomly) generated sandbox space exploration game by indie studio Hello Games where you do just that - Explore space. There are a large number of planets to explore in a virtually infinite playable area.

The universe isn’t infinite, nor is it random. It would take 585 billion years to see all 18 quintillion planets whose details are governed by “hundreds of rules we’ve made to make a sci-fi universe we want to explore.”

IGN No Man's Sky Article

There's also no story per se. There are no quests, so you literally play how you want. There is end-game content, but all other details are unknown outside of the goal to reach the center of the universe.

Another amazing aspect of the game is that every planet is literally a planet, revolving around a star with other planets. The game actually consists of star systems and galaxies. Each planet is planet-sized, meaning that it would take days - even months - to travel around a planet (especially on foot). Sean Murray (the games lead designer) said that you could actually start walking in one direction on the planet and go the whole way around to where you started, if you want.

One more interesting tidbit:

We’ve created special software that models throats, allowing animal calls to be defined by the shape and sizes of their bodies. Every planet’s soundscape is unique.

Playstation Blog NMS Article

Sadly, there is no confirmed release date for the game yet. Earlier in the year, it was rumored to be out by now, but new reports are speculating that we might not be able to play it until 2016. There are also articles suggesting the game will support Project Morpheus and other VR technology as well.

Regardless, I'm absolutely stoked. Here is a link to the official No Man's Sky website. You can find some news and some cool media (like wallpapers) to download if you want.

So what do you think about this game? What about this game are you most or least excited about?

I think it's an awesome idea..although super ambitious and seems like it would be a lot to keep up with.

I've been playing the beta for a while.

It's quite impressive and amazing.

All around.

That's too awesome.

While I know many games have betas, I've heard nothing about a No Man's Sky beta. I'm not calling you a liar, Tenth. Please don't misconstrue my intentions, I'm just skeptical. I've been all over the game and news about the game for a couple years. I know I very well could've missed something though. You could also be a dev for Hello Games. >.> Are you really a dev under the guise of a beta tester?

Anyway, most betas have a restriction on sharing content, but is there any way you can share anything?
I'd love to see some insider peeks at the game.

It is really ambitious. The way they talk about the engine, I feel like it's a really simple process (with a load of math) that generates the fine details on the planets and stuff...

If the engine holds up, I feel like they should be good...but only time will tell.

It looks cool. If they had a co-op mode, it looks almost like the kind of thing my husband and I might play together if we ever get my rig back up and rolling again.

*sigh* This computer sharing is annoying.

This sounds like an absolutely beautiful game and will have no problem buying it new release price! I hope they add ancient ruins of a mysterious alien race on random planets.

You're not wrong, but your opinion differs from mine a bit. I can't truly judge because I've never played Elite Dangerous, but I've heard it is rather dull after a while. Mainly a space flight sim with resource gathering and space combat.

I can see No Man's Sky getting a bit repetitious after a while, but I think it'll retain its playability longer than Elite Dangerous. I think the thing that's going to push it a little further is the procedurally generated life. Some of the aliens in the trailers are huge sand worms!

Speaking of which, do you know if Elite Dangerous has an ending? Also, how big the universe is in Elite Dangerous? I almost bought it on Steam while it was on sale a month or two ago, but I didn't.

My sister and her husband goes through the exact same thing. That's one joy of being single.

...But, I'd love some co-op with a wife.

Those monoliths (which kind of remind me of ruins...but maybe not in the way you're thinking) in some of the screenshots have something to do with the endgame. I'm speculating that the end game has something to do with a race of ancient beings...but I could be totally wrong.

I do know those monoliths do appear randomly on planets though. I'm curious to see if there are any variations of the monoliths or other buildings relating to them. Crashed ships on planets are also confirmed. So that might be neat too. Hope you can board them and explore, but that might be asking too much though.

I think it's due out on PS4 and PC at the same time now. I even heard rumors that it would hit Xbox One, but shortly after I read that those rumors completely disappeared.

That makes me wary. I don't want to invest in a port unless they take the time to do it. Dragon Age 3 was a mess on PC because they geared the controls to console and didn't give PC players the flexibility they needed to make the controls theirs.

I never bought Inquisition on PC, but the Dragon Age titles before that did feel really wonky compared to the console version. I also heard other ports had a ton of issues - Arkham Knight, Watch Dogs, and GTA V being a few of them. I'm hoping that since it's an indie studio, the game will be better on all platforms.

Indies have a lot riding on their games, where as triple-A devs don't really have to worry. Look at Battlefield 4 and NHL 15. Both games were garbage, but the company is still thriving.

You sir need to leak some info haha....

And yes the game looks good. For anyone wanting a watered down version of it try Rodina...nice sandbox space sim for a few bucks I think..if you hit a steam sale its pretty cheap.

.

To my knowledge there isn't an end game, as for the size, of the universe, from there FAQ
The vast, scientifically accurate 1:1 scale of the seamless Milky Way galaxy is created using a mix of procedural generation and artist direction.
Around 400 billion star systems according to current scientific theories of star system formation with planets and moons that orbit and rotate.
Cosmic phenomena like black holes, supernovas, active binary stars etc.
Specially handcrafted overrides for 160,000 known stars in the night sky and planetary objects that we know and love. For example, our solar system with Earth, Moon and Mars, other systems with recently discovered planets, etc.

Its pretty big
I have managed to discover some systems and planets but there isn't a website where you can search your username and see at a later time,

I know it is, and that has some up sides and some big downers.

The up side is that it slows the pace I need to up grade my machine to stay up with game specs. I moderately priced PC build can easily run most console ports without breaking a sweat, and since the hardware in a console is limited until the next new box is released, it will be a while before I have to start looking at the next really serious rounds of upgrades to my internal hardware.

The downside is that the consoles are what most games are geared for, so they often act really weird on a PC unless I pay to plug a controller into my rig and learn how to use it.

I can't for this game, I've really gotten hyped for this one. The scale is mind blowing, and the theme while not what some were wanting, is a nice and calmer welcome to the hyper violent game word. I look forward to really chillin out with this game. That release date can't come soon enough, it'd help if they ever announced it!

Same here. I couldn't agree more about the release date comment though. I hate when these things drag out, but I guess if they're going to produce a better game come launch time, it's worth the wait.

Speaking of release dates...I fear that they might wait to launch it along side the VR systems during the first half of next year. I don't know if I can wait that long. Although with MGS V and Fallout 4, the wait won't be quite as bad.
