It's not a DDG or FFG, but it's certainly a millitary ship ... yet it has no weapons

image link if you can not see it

www.freewebs.com...

Any ideas folks?

I'm thinking maybe comand and control, which would help explain the stealthy design

Some sort of LST, I gather

I have poked around a bit and all I can find is this

Qingdao is the largest naval base in the Far East.

Flagship: Harbin (112) DDG

Ships:

7 Destroyers: 6 Type 051 Luda Class 105 Jinan (type II), 106 Xian, 107 Yinchuan, 108 Xining, 109 Kaifeng, 110 Kalian (type II*); 1 Type 052 Luhu Class 112 Harbin based at Guzhen Bay
?? Frigates : 3 Type 053H Jianghu Class, 1 Type053 Jianghu II Class, 544 Siping and ?? of Type 053 JiangWei II Class
23 Conventional Submarines : 13 Type 035 Ming Class based at Qingdao and Xiapingdao; 10 Type 033 Remeo Class in active reserve only
6 Nuclear Submarines: 1 Type 092 SSBN Xia Class 406; 5 Type 091 SSN Han Class 401-405
1 Ballistic Missle Submarine: 1 Golf Class SSB serve as trials platforms
10 Large Landing Ships: 3 1-511 Shan Class LST, 4 Type 079 Yuliang Class, 3 Type 074 Yuhai Class,
1 Training ship: Daxin Class, 81 Zhenghe

so it would seem to be a type of large landing ship, but 511 is also the designation of an older Jianghu class frigate

Looks like a support or central type command ship to me.

Not even a low prifile in the water, no guns, no obvious missile or radar batteries. Yup, must be a support vessel of some sort.

could be a scrapper an old russian ship bought in to be broken up

or a fleet auxilliary vessel for resupply etc.

I used to work at a shipyard, although I don't claim expertise. However, it looks to me like it is located at a shipyard, and it may well be under construction and incomplete. There are a lot of cranes, large and small around it, which makes it look like work is being done. In that case, its too early to tell what it is until all the pieces are fitted, and it may well turn out to be a conventional vessel.

hmm... judging by these two photo's it does not seem to resemble anything currently in the fleet.

Type 52C Guided missile destroyer

Type 54 missile frigate

Could that be the type 52D I have been hearing about on the internet?

Type 52D is suppose to have a tonnage of 8000-10000 tonnes. Its suppose to be much more stealthy than the 52C as every piece of its weaponry is supposed to be RCS tested and designed to be stealthy through shape and RAM coatings. But it must be incomplete if it is the 52D. 52D would have a even more advanced radar system which functions similar to the Aegis systems. And its missing the Chinese made CIWS and anti-ship missiles. From the angle of the picture, the ship could very well already have the new VLS system designed in the recent past.

But at the end, the ship does not seem to be Chinese at all, Chinese navy use different colour schemes for their destroyers and the number doesn't seem to be right, if its 52D then its suppose to be 172 as the last constructed destroyer was type 52C 171.

When compared with other destroyers and frigates, the shape seems to be of a incomplete frigate as new frigates have a much higher connected upper body while destroyers are have lower connected upper structure because they need to field ASCMs and other things.
