The serpent is a symbol of knowledge from ancient times ... relating to Hermes who's forerunner was Thoth of Ancient Egypt.

I suggest that the spiralling snakes represent the flow of Universal energy or/and the double helix of DNA

Hermes used his staff to break up 2 snakes fighting....that is the source for the imagery.

I should have added this earlier....

en.wikipedia.org...(symbolism)

Serpent symbolism tends to deal more with life, birth, rebirth. The snake sheds its skin and is born anew, so is a very apt symbol. The similarity to the umbilicus was noted by ancient man, too (dried skin left behind), allowing the snake to be the usher of youth and vibrance.

You think of the snake as being evil because of religious programming. Dig beneath the veneer offered to the profane, and you will see a greater mystery.

Why snakes? Why not something a bit more friendly and sweet? How about 2 angels or 2 Dolphins? Whatever the reason I do not like it.

if i remember correctly... there is also one about dolphins. if i were to use them in spiritual teachings. i would use them to convey their compassion and friendliness to humans. who are not like them. their openness and hospitality to outsiders, strangers. these attributes make the dolphin a powerful spiritual symbol and tool for teaching spiritual access. of course.. this will cover only one or 2 aspects of the spiritual path. i can then use a bullcalf to symbolize strength and power so that people understand spirituality brings true strength and power. etc etc etc

I wonder if the story of Hermes breaking up two fighting snakes is allegorical for actual events

The Greeks of course adored Egypt ... The symbol of the serpent was worn by Priestesses and Pharaohs alike
Representing knowledge and power ... such symbols would have been keenly noted by Greek scholars

much like the white lotus. conquering this sphere of existence breaks the cycle of life death and rebirth. the more appropriate symbol for this particular serpent however would be the ouroboros. the infinite cycle. the eternal life symbol. on this level of existence we are bound by the cycle. but transcendence leads to infinity of existence. so again the serpent has dualmeanings in a totally new context. symbolism is a really deep thing. but once you understand it well.. one symbol... one simple symbol can carry for you all of the spiritual information in all the religious and ancient books combined.

thats the power of symbolism and why it has been so heavily relied upon. its a great way to condense information to be easily transmitted.

so as we were discussing earlier... the serpent is a symbol of duality. but it is also a symbol for 'completion'.. or 'perfection'. one snake for those trapped in the lower realms, the same snake is the vehicle of escaping the lower realms. a dual duality of symbols.

i remember when i used to struggle to wrap my head around these things. its so easy now and its... AWESOME

its easy bro. so easy. everything is connected. and the answer to your question can be found right under your nose in the bible. the bible has made it very clear..

the prophets landed near sumeria, the white man japheth was given lands to the north. the asian (shem)was given lands to the east, and the negro was given lands to the south(africa/egypt. every time there was a falling away God would send one of his other prophets from another land to conquer them and bring them steadfast back to the true teachings. killing the profaners with their fallacies if necessary.(yes it is moral if they are trying to mislead you away from God then God authorizes their death.)

then what remains were those under the new prophets rule who would now sift thru their teachings to re-incorporate it correctly, taking out the nonsense practices the people there contrived. thats how it always went. so when the greeks conquered the egyptians with the descendents of cyrus to alexander iii this same thing occured.

the greeks werent foolish. they didnt steal anything. they had a man of God too who knew God and was instructed by God. and what all prophets know is that all the messages are the same. so all you have to do, is remove the bollcks inserted into true divine inspired teachings to correct the wrongs the people of the area were performing.(molding clay idols and worshipping them as a personal god.) then you incorporate your own region's teachings and this allowed the creation of the greco-roman empire. allowing two totally different and foreign cultures to merge under service to one God the correct way. and when the romans lost their way and stopped following God and lost prophethood. God took away their divine right to rule and installed democracy thru the coming of Christ.

i got it all summarized. the whole story.

prophets never warred with oneanother. they would leave, allow one of Gods other prophets to conquer the land, and then later led to conquer another land that fell away from the true teachings.

The old Hebrew goddess and consort of Yahweh, Ashera, was sometimes symbolized as a snake coiling around a tree. That symbol was later reused in the Adam and Eve story as a symbol of Satan. Sort of a way of slagging the old wife after the divorce.

The Mysteries do not really relate to the cultures that they exist within, other than maybe the imagery/metaphors used to carry the "Secrets".

While the Greeks may have found value in the offerings of Egypt, the Mysteries supercede these nations while at the same time buttressing them.

The snakes in the caduceus do have relations to "perfection" insofar as the duad gives rise to the triad. Trinity. Mother/father/child. Father/son/holy ghost. Male/female/offspring.

Yes it is true that a symbol can contain knowledge that is timeless in a way

I believe it is all down to perception and interpretation on a path of learning

One snake or 2 makes no difference to me , I think snakes are slithering evil creatures and associating them with medicine is evil in my opinion. Big Pharma controls the medical profession and they create sicknesses on purpose for profit.

I do not disagree with you in the slightest here.

I was merely pointing out the proper staff, from Greek mythology, that was associated with "medicine".

Saying the two snakes around a pole has Nazi wings, is like saying the Swastika was Nazi propaganda, back when it supposedly a symbol of peace used by Buddhists, and various cultures. Even Thor was symbolized with a swastika.

I'm surprised that it even has a story from the Old testament about putting a snake on a pole.

Why? Judaism has its own school(s) of The Mysteries. Kabbala is an example.

There are esoteric Christian studies as well. The esotericists see the religions for what they really are: allegories and metaphors meant to steward knowledge.

Have you heard the notion that when the Europeans came to the America's and met the indigenous societies, particularly the Mesoamericans, they were stunned at the similarities between Christianity and the religions of the Amerind peoples?

This was esotericists taking note of the metaphors and symbols, and how they were used. The underlying notions in the new world "religions" were almost like a cousin to the old world.

Which is interesting because it intimates 2 obvious possibilities:

- esoteric connections and religious foundations predate mans entry into the new world 20k years ago. Meaning it could potentially be a peek into the mind of ancient man, as having 2 disparate examples would allow you to distill out the more archaic elements

- esoteric connections and religious foundations are part and parcel to the human experience. The reason the new and old world had such similar views is because the machines creating these views were both so similar (humans being the machines). With human thought arising from neurochemical reactions, it is only natural that the general concepts that arise will be similar across geographical regions. Ironically: this reinforces some of the esoteric notions about self, other, and our role within them.
