I've never tried it fried in shortening. As for unhealthy, you only live once (as far as anyone knows) and everyone has to go some time. So, you might as well enjoy it. Deep fried twinkies sound good, too.

I grew up on fried bologna.

We call it "poor man's steak" round these parts.

I prefer to buy the big chunk of bung bologna from the butcher/deli and cut it up into whatever thickness I want depending on what I'm doing with it. Sometimes I fry it, sometimes I bbq it, and sometimes I cut it up into small cubes and fry it with onions in butter as a topping on burgers/mashed spuds/baked beans/whatever.

We get a hankering for it every now and then as a breakfast meal (with fried eggs and hashbrowns) in replacement of the usual bacon and eggs. And then hubby will make sammiches out of the leftover fried bologna for himself as a snack.

We both grew up on the stuff, so it's something we like to have every once in a while.

I have no problem eating "lips and arseholes" (that's what my grandpappy always told us bologna was made from).

today i had to make a day trip to austin (14 hours round trip). since we got in a little early, we grabbed a bite to eat. I had the foie gras burger. it was the only thing i ate all day. mostly because i couldn't eat anything else all day. But lord, was it good.

That's goose liver pate, right? Wasn't there a big stink a while back about that? Then again, when isn't there a big stink about something? It sounds good though.

Italian shops in this area make pepperoni bread. They fold sliced pepperoni into the loaf before they bake it. It is delicious.

mine wasn't made into a pate. it was sliced foie gras, then seared off on both sides and settled in comfortably in the cheese on top of the burger.

A recipe.... I have not tried it, so I can't vouch for it.

The photo and the recipe sounds like what I am used to eating. Other recipes have mozzarella cheese in it and is more like a rolled up pizza. The kind I enjoy is like the typical Italian long, thin loaf with the pepperoni inside and they slice a few diagonal cuts across i to allow some of the pepperoni to be exposed and it gets crispy.

I sent it to my friend and she's excited about trying it. I'll tell her about the variations of recipe.

Yum! But only a couple times a year. Same with my 'jail sandwiches' as I call them (don't ask): Yellow american 'cheese' on white with yellow mustard.

I love it! I live in Kentucky and my favorite brand so far is the cheapest they sell at Save-a-lot. I've always kind of been a boloney snob and wouldn't get the cheap stuff but my boyfriend bought some and man, I've been missing out! Can't remember the brand name but it's pure bologna perfection!
