The Corpse flower or to give it its proper name the Amorphophallus titanum is a pretty spectacular plant , its flower can grow up to 3 metres high and 3 metres in circumference but when it flowers it emits an odor of rotting meat , fortunately it only flowers every 7 - 12 years.

The plants conservation status is classed as Vulnerable so places like Paignton Zoo do a great service in protecting this smelly species ... rather them than me.

Time lapse footage of the monster awakening , (spoiler alert) it's not very exciting.

Picture of a very small man in a flower box ... or Giles Palmer from Paignton Zoo with his Titan Arum.

And the smell? Curator of Plants and Gardens Giles Palmer said: “Imagine you have the smell of rotting meat in a tin can and you open that can on the hottest, most humid day of the year!”

Big smile for a guy who seems to love the smell of filth. I can respect that.

Would be funky to see one of those on the side of the road. It's beastly.

We have one in nz which has just flowered for the second time in 2 years or close to that, which is pretty unusual. I did see it in planton or person, but it featured big on our national news. I think it's the same flower anyway. Rotten meat flower from Indonesia. Anyways.
