That's my thoughts. Either this guy led to someone being arrested...or he paid em off/has connections. The judge even makes reference to his debt to these unsavory shadow individuals.

Intent is everything when it comes to justice.

Nice try but..., the Law (in America) does not excuse someone who WILLING does something illegal. He could have mitigated the extent of his law breaking by going to the police and explaining why he was being coerced or extorted.

Not likely the most way most would handle the situation, but just stating the legal aspects. I did not see where it went to a jury...seems like a plea deal...and set himself at the mercy of the court. This time...he "beat the odds" and won a reprieve. This is not "Business as Usual".

Exactly. There's people that get arrested for criminal speeding because they're getting chased by crazy drivers and they didn't signal the police or call so they are just as much at fault.
