is there precedent here? what got to me most was the part where the CO told US soldiers to avoid speaking english and wearing uniforms in the memo.

I had a close friend who was stationed in Germany a year ago. He was told not to wear his uniform out in public as the locals would screw with him. They were told to blend in and not act too "American."

That's not surprising US has been trying to watch their profile in Europe since the 1980's and is conscience of their safety and German citizens .

On April 5, 1986 three people were killed and around 230 injured when La Belle discothèque was bombed in West Berlin. The entertainment venue was commonly frequented by United States soldiers, and two of the dead and 79 of the injured were American servicemen.

Back in early 2005 there was a female Army Captain that used to run the perimeter, outside the wire at like 0500hrs.

Her nody was found later in the day after failing to report. She had been beaten, gangraped and decapitated. The last time I was in Germany in 2009 I asked about it and was told they still had no leads and hadn't found her head.

Just off post there was also a little night club that was controlled by Turks. Enough service members were beaten by a mob of them, or stabbed that it was verboten to visit it.

It is sad that these are suppose to be our allies. My friend had an absolute blast in Germany, you just had to be careful. But, I guess we are lucky to not have other nations military bases in our country, I can imagine our populous not being so nice to German soldiers running around our cities.

Well its Germany's country and they have the right to dictate rules to foreigners.

Allies or not you still get Criminals there's.


Criminals don't care much when it comes to geo political alliances. If a gang of rapists want there way they will pick a target be it a natural born German, Turk, Brit or American.

The phrase "When in Rome" comes to mind.

If you're visiting a foreign land, do some research on the culture and mannerisms of the people, and do your best to emulate that. It'll save you, the traveler, some embarrassment. You'll find yourself being treated better if you're not seen as some tourist.

It's not surprising that US Military would direct their servicemen to not wear their fatigues or dress uniforms outside of the base unless on official business. Seems common sense to me, honestly.

I'd guess it's more to do with Germanys muslim population rather than antipathy from ordinary Germans.

The same sort of advice is given to service personnel in the UK too. Even kids attending cadets are warned about covering up.
