Google's new finger control technology is straight out of a science fiction movie

Wow! This is way cool, ATS and it's just like in the movies. Google's Lab for Advanced Projects has created what's called Project SOLI which has been developed as the need for finger control has changed with the development of smaller and smaller computer controls.

The days of swiping a finger against a glass screen might soon seem as antiquated as dialing numbers on a rotary telephone.
If Google has its way you won't need to touch a screen at all anymore.

The company's lab for advanced projects showed off new technology on Friday that lets users move their fingers in the air to control objects in the virtual world.

It's called Project Soli, and it uses radar waves to detect precise finger movements or finger "micromotions."

The result is something that looks like it's from a science-fiction movie such as Minority Report or Her, in which characters manipulated virtual objects by gracefully moving their hands or fingers in the air.

The applications for Electronics and Virtual tech are immense. This has my head spinning from the possibilities. What says ATS?

If they get this working decently it will be great when apps are developed so that the deaf can translate sign automatically into speech and text.

Cool explanation of RF. Something like this has always been destined to replace the current input devices. I just don't want to end up a huge tool like this guy

They already have this it is a tablet that uses a camera and converts the hand signals into speech or text. It also listens and than converts the speech into text for the hearing impaired.

It's about time they get this technology off the ground. We've only been seeing it in sci-fi for years. Minority Report, Iron Man/Avengers, Avatar...

I think someday smart watches will have micro-holographic projectors that will project stuff in 3-D about 6" off your wrist, and be manipulated with your other hand.

if i have to hold my arm up to see a projection from my wrist, im not buying the device.

But to project in front of me...that would be fantastic. To project directly into my neural paths (integration) would be even cooler.

after watching the video,and hearing one of the techs mention the camera movement capture devices.
it becomes clear they have just looked at kinect camera sensors

and thought how can i improve this and then took existing radar tech ,ie fishfinders ,small boat devices these are cheap,
so in reality they have not re-invented the wheel.
they have just enhanced a existing product ,yes its cool but lets call it what it really is.

I think this tech is pretty cool. It will eliminate the need to carry around a bunch of equipment. You could literally carry a CPU that you could interface out of thin air.

Kind of been doing this on my X-Box Connex for a while now....

The trickier parts are the precise holographic screens I'd think.
