While I am all for safety when I am going to be traveling on a plane, Post 9/11 regulations from the TSA really went a little overboard in my estimation.

www.tsa.gov... : Take a gander at the list if you are not familiar!

Sharp Objects
Sporting Goods
Guns & Firearms
Tools
Martial Arts & Self Defense Items
Explosive & Flammable Materials, Disabling Chemicals & Other Dangerous Items
Other Items

These are just categories, the things listed in each category are too numerous to list here.

If I were a terrorist or someone with evil intentions, don't you think I could find other ways to sabotage the plane or incapacitate one of the stewards? I could bring a pen or a pencil and stab someone if I wanted to, I could use my finger, anyone carry keys?, you are allowed to bring 1 book of matches (only takes one to start a fire), how about plastic ware (really), is cayenne pepper forbidden or just the spray?

Seriously, even with 3D printing I could make components to a weapon and they could look and be painted to be harmless by themselves, but connect the pieces and voilà. Who do they think they are kidding? Not me!

I take it that you don't travel much?

These things have been banned on planes for over a decade.

Ooops.. now you've done it! Now we have to add your name to the "No Fly List"!

I fly as little as possible.

Things that caught me off guard-

1) deodorant.
I'm an overweight french guy who works hard- I tend to smell bad and sweat a lot.

2) camera battery.
I had a DSLR camera, with two batteries in it- I could easily beat someone to death with this camera. In one hit, if I had to.
Spare battery in my pocket? Nope- that's got to be checked baggage! it could be a bomb!

3) "randomly selected" for additional screening.
Random my ass.
Want to be selected? Wear sunglasses before sunrise, grow a beard, and wear a bandana or bucket hat.
God forbid you're just a hungover person who hates people and airports, eh? Anyone trying to "sneak in" something dangerous wouldn't wear that many cranial accessories anyway. It's downright suspicious.

I think you should give it a go and see where it gets you. Good luck.

Personally, it's the simple measures that often work as (to be honest) someone with a bunch of keys trying to hijack a plane would be easier to overcome than someone with a long knife. Think it through.

You are correct, I do not fly often, but the last time I did they made me give up 3 lighters and a coffee from Starbucks! And what does the fact that these things have been banned for a decade have anything to do with me posting this today? It is still ridiculous. Oh and that security they claim to gma.yahoo.com... be enforcing seems to be seriously flawed.

An internal investigation of the Transportation Security Administration revealed security failures at dozens of the nation’s busiest airports, where undercover investigators were able to smuggle mock explosives or banned weapons through checkpoints in 95 percent of trials, ABC News has learned.

Well thought out reply! You even managed to use a word that describes exactly where I reside! Sure beats the heck out of the sphere you (he/she) are in!

Not a problem, I do not want to fly anyway! Just laughable how 9/11 being the made up pack of lies that it was could alter the freedom we have to do simple things, like bring a coffee on the plane!

Yet you can bring a laptop and your iphone, which both have batteries. Who thinks a hacker can't affect the plane with their computer? Saw an article not to long ago that suggested this happened.

Why are you to lazy to find a picture yourself and post it? Want to use Israel as an example you are comparing apples to oranges, brilliant argument. Israel has been forced to be this way since they were granted status as a country. I bet they did not ban lighters and coffee?

Take a key and place it between your index finger and middle finger with your fist closed and the key extending outward, weaponized keys now. I would have no reason to bring a long knife on the plane unless I was a chef. And the who are they kidding part? I am not fooled into believing that just because they decided to ban these ridiculous items that I did refer to in the OP, we are any safer!

Well if you feel the need to include Mexico go right ahead, but this OP was about the ridiculous things they ban in the name of safety.

A couple of years ago I had to go through the body scanner because I had a small tube of toothpaste in my purse. I'd had my teeth cleaned a few days before and put it and the toothbrush the dentist gave me in my purse. I didn't realize it was a forbidden item.
Lol they made my boyfriend go through too cause I guess he was an accomplice in the toothpaste caper

But, according to the latest tests, you'll get away with it about 67 out of 70 times...

I never have any problem at the airport. Then again, I intentionally avoid flying into large airports, so that's probably why. Thanks to Google's Matrix Flight Search, I can get very very cheap fares by flying into smaller airports. I flew round trip from Tennessee to Orlando, FL for $150. Yeah. For both tickets. $150.
