This happens because people are lazy. It's far easier to just pick a side and have all your beliefs ready-made for you. One doesn't have to think or use any kind of critical reasoning. It's more comfortable to be surrounded by like-minded people that can back you and help defend you when attacked.

It also plays into the instant gratification game Americans love. You have an instant set of beliefs, core values and memes you can throw at someone else to feel better about yourself. And that, really, is what it comes down to -- make us feel better about ourselves by bashing others.
