What is it with Hollywood remaking all of these movies? Is it that they ran out of ideas, or is it because they feel they can make them better with newer technology?

Thanks for reminding me. I read an article back in around 2004 on the quality of movies. They went through and somehow produced the results that the movie industry truly had ran out of ideas. They went so far as showing how many remade movies that there had been and the ones that were left to remake. And the fact that the basic plots for a lot of movies were redone with superficial changes and a change of title.

I thought they'd run out of ideas. You would think they'd have a writer that has something original.
I think that the changes they make are to "modernize" them, in some cases. Or, with ET (which was not remade but re released), they edit stuff out. In the original movie the agents had guns in their hands. When they re released it, they digitally edited the guns out and gave them walkie talkies.

A reason for erasing and replacing the guns could be PR management of Security Agencies. Otherwise I don't see the point.

Get your ass to Mars. The original Total Recall movie was great. A fantastic mix of corporate villainary and alien prostitutes. Wicked SFX.

Robo Cop is another great example of a movie that is timeless. Face melt and car sploosh anyone? Hub Cap zooming buy and can you fly Bobby?

I loved Robocop. I have to see if it's on youtube now. I haven't seen it in years.

I couldn't agree more on 'The Fifth Element', it's just outright slick and stylish. For some reason though, 'Blade Runner' just never held my interest, no idea why, lol. Guess it's just my general dislike for Harrison Ford, idk.

I like both of those movies for different reasons. Fifth Element is just plain old campy fun. Blade Runner is a noir, and if you really want to get insight, read the novel it's based off of ... then watch the movie.

It's one of those rare times when I will recommend that. The novel has enough deep philosophical stuff in it, that the movie doesn't actually detract from the experience for me.

There really are a limited number of basic plots when it's all boiled down to bare essentials. What it comes down to is that Hollywood has run out of creativity.

I read speculation somewhere that the great film makers and script writers of the past decades were inspired first by the great novels of the past (the Old White Guy canon we are taught to abhor today) and used that influence in writing the truly great scripts. The movie makers of the era we are all reminiscing over cut their teeth on those great films.

These days, you have scriptwriters who don't have the great writers of the past and are cobbling together scripts based on these films. Where do you see art or greatness coming out of that?
