There are so many... but here's a few.

“If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”
Dalai Lama and/or "old African proverb"

"The best teachers are those who show you where to look, but don't tell you what to see."
Alexandra K. Trenfor

"I've come to realize that the biggest problem anywhere in the world is that people's perceptions of reality are compulsively filtered through the screening mesh of what they want, and do not want, to be true."
Travis Walton

"You are free to choose, but you are not free from the consequence of your choice."
A universal paradox

"I take advice from all sides. But in the end, my head is my only council" - Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte

"We didn't land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on us!" - Malcolm X

"Become the change you want to see" (paraphrased) - Gandhi

I don't know where these 3 come from, but they were passed on to me from my Mom & her Mom:

"Never say what someone else will or won't do. Because you don't know what's on their mind or what they're going through" - My Grandmother

"You're going to have to work twice as hard as everyone else while only receiving half the credit everyone else gets" - My Grandmother

"What's done in the dark will always come to the light" - My Mom when she confronted me about some of my (then) high school shenanigans

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.

-Thomas Jefferson

Just as relevant now as then.

Also the quotes in my signature. Don't know why I forgot those

"Rules are made for the obediance of fools and the guidance of wise men." A quote from Douglas Bader, one that got me in a bunch of trouble growing up, especially since I was the only child of a military officer...who just happened to be the one who taught it to me! Didn't think to ever remind him of that though. And as a grumpy ole woman I blame a lot of my "oopsies" on that saying when my mouth gets wa as aaay ahead of my brain and mouth!!

not my favorite quote but just something that is sticking in my head after watching a TED talk a half hour ago: "Everyone is a bit psychopathic."

"If not now, then when?
If not you, then who?
If not God, then how?" - one of my fiance's fellow boy scouts when he was a kid

"Get to the chopper!!!!!"

"If, by no, you mean YES--then hell yeah!" - Me

lol ok now for serious, here's some quotes that have become recent favorites. I don't just have one favorite--besides maybe something mi abuela used to say ("there is no such thing as a real friend")

the next couple are by Lemony Snicket--my favorite modern writer (these are all from one book, "Who Could That Be At This Hour?")

“I do what I do," I said, "in order to do something else.”

“They say in every library there is a single book that can answer the question that burns like a fire in the mind.”

“But the world did not match the picture in my head, and instead I was with a strange, uncombed person, overlooking a sea without water and a forest without trees.”

“There's an easy method for finding someone when you hear them scream. First get a clean sheet of paper and a sharp pencil. Then sketch out nine rows of fourteen squares each. Then throw the piece of paper away and find whoever is screaming so you can help them. It is no time to fiddle with paper.”

“You may be right,' she said, a phrase which here meant 'I’m wrong, but I don’t have the courage to say so.”

"You must be all a-tingle with excitement.'
'I guess so,' I said, but I did not feel a-tingle. I did not feel a-anything.”

“There was something I was always very good at, however, and that was teaching myself not to be frightened while frightening things are going on. It is difficult to do this, but I had learned. It is simply a matter of putting one’s fear aside, like the vegetable on the plate you don’t want to touch until all of your rice and chicken are gone, and getting frightened later, when one is out of danger. Sometimes I imagine I will be frightened for the rest of my life because of all of the fear I put aside during my time in Stain’d-by-the-Sea.”

"Stretched out in front of me was my time as an adult, and then a skeleton, and then nothing except perhaps a few books on a few shelves.”

“Nothing firms up a friendship like a good-natured argument.”
