How is common core and no child left behind working out ? The seeds of our own third world status are being sown as we do nothing..IMO

"This is the first time we have a truly global scale of the quality of education," Andreas Schleicher, the OECD's education director, said yesterday.

The OECD economic think tank says the comparisons show the link between education and economic growth.

"The idea is to give more countries, rich and poor, access to comparing themselves against the world's education leaders, to discover their relative strengths and weaknesses, and to see what the long-term economic gains from improved quality in schooling could be for them," he said.

Asian countries swept the first five rungs. Singapore was followed by Hong Kong and South Korea. Japan and Taiwan were tied at fourth. The US could only manage 28th.

Finland, which has long been famous for educational quality, ended up sixth this time.

Do you know what I had for dinner tonight? Inch and a half thick ribeye steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn on the cob, a big salad, a great big cold glass of milk then I topped it off with apple pie and ice cream. And I actually threw about half of it away. What did the rest of the world eat ?

Yeah we still have it like that! I think the rest of the world is confused by a case of envy!!

It started long before Common Core, brother. You can trace the decline all the way back to government intrusion into the household. Back to where single-parent families became commonplace.

Not to derail your thread, but it really boils down to separation of Church and State. The state wanted say-so in marriage and that resulted in divorce rates that are insane. I mean, how often does the Church dissolve a marriage?

Back to the end statement you made ... Anyone ever wish they could get off the roller coaster just before it starts barreling over the precipice? Yeah ... Now how many of you considered jumping instead of just holding on for dear life. This isn't the time to sit idly in your seat and say, "Nothing I can do about it."

It's pretty basic. Teach your kids ... or you'll be sorry you didn't.

Separation of church and state made US schools worse?

What on earth are you talking about..

And divorce rates reflect the amount of people who don't stay married.. Nothing more.

Oh and all the smartest people I know.. None of them are Christians. I grew up in a school district that was ranked in the top 50 in the entire USA. It's all doctors around here.. Not even a hint of religion or Jesus..
The reason was that all the smart teachers went there was to get payed more, and the local taxes bring in much more money per student than most similar places..

The issues with schooling are not so much fixable in the current way of doing things. Our culture in the US is more about freedom than following teachers.. So we will always have issues.. It is good to think about this and try and come to conclusions..

LOWER the class size. Bam... This costs a lot of money, but it's the easiest way to "create jobs" and to also TEACH better.... Dun dun dun....

I'm willing to pay more for students, but only if we cut spending on the military.

There's three types of lies. Lies, damned lies and statistics. I noticed Vietnam was number 12 in the rankings. I'm quite sure every school-age child in Vietnam is enrolled in school?????

Let them distort The facts however you see fit then present their case. The bottom line comes down to the standard of living. And actually believe it or not obesity levels in a country. The most successful countries have the highest obesity levels. Do you know why that is? Because the countries with the highest obesity levels are the most prosperous.

So the seeds for this nations destruction was sown when it was founded? If this were a religious run nation we would be way lower than 28th.

Hmmm.... And posts like this are why you are so far down the list, because you think it is something to brag about that you had a collossal amount of food in front of you and you threw most of it away. Aside from the waste of food and money, there are people out there in the world who would have used all that to feed their whole family.

FYI though, we have food like that in Europe too but the only difference is we won't over indulge ourselves, throw most of it away and then brag about it like it's an achievement.

Inability to see the actual facts of the situation is why the British Empire is subservient to the U.S. That post was meant to expose the reason for much of the anger against the US it's called envy, the green eyed monster.

I'm from America Son... Haha..

But as to the data, they havn't released it yet, so I can't see how they are rating things, and if it holds up in my view to real world learning..

The standard of living is NOT the bottom line of education. And you bringing this up says something to your insecurity about America. We can be ranked 28th in education.. We probably should be. Maybe it's the fact that I know sooo many teachers.. But.. Kids are not doing so well these days.

And again I'll put out my simple solution that costs a lot of money....

LOWER class sizes.. Then the teachers have enough free time around common core to still teach.

But if you want to cover your ears and pretend we are the best because we are fed well.. OK.. Guess I had better teachers than you..

I would think that economic pressures had more to do with the dissolve of marriage than the separation of the Church.

Make both parents work and raise a child , it doesn't leave a lot of room or energy for quality time.

But lets go fight another war!

While I don't think common core is a god send, not sure it has been around long enough to really make a dent in something that has never really been all that great.

No anger here, just pointing out the obvious that your gluttony is nothing to be proud of.

The fact you fail to see that, then go off on one about "the British Empire" and some delusion of envy just highlights the piss poor education you received, proving the OP.

Is this data based per capita or all conclusive. In your rush to find A agreeable stance you neglected to find that out.

No ... exactly the opposite.

Had the State stayed out of matters of the Church you wouldn't have anywhere near such a steep drop to contend with.

I guess if I lived in a community predominantly comprised of graduate level residents, I might be blind to the origins as well.

Like I said it was not meant as gluttony. It was meant to point out the envy most of the world holds us in. Which also explains the anger.

" ode to be a ugly girl, but too pretty is also a doom. Because everyone harbors a hatred for the prettiest girl in the room."

Ya lets brag about being able to toss out food.

Is thinking some one is arrogant the same as being envious?
