I was surprise Saturday morning to see an item that Sheryl Sandberg's husband died suddenly Friday night. The story was VERY under wraps. He was 47. We someone (with a couple) so high profile, you typically see more details about the death. For 36+ hours there were stories about how wonderful he was, how healthy he was, and how sudden his Friday night death was. It was so quiet in fact that you might begin to suspect suicide or something else that the family couldn't begin to discuss or wrap their heads around. But none of the press about how amazing he is/was, how great their marriage was, what an exemplary business man he is/was, and what a great, positive family man would give that any credence.

So the news broke today that he died from a head trauma. That always freaks me out a bit. So I clicked and read the article on Yahoo. The story was that the family was on vacation together in Mexico, he went to work out Friday evening at 4pm, and was found around 6:30pm in the resort gym lying in a pool of blood by a treadmill with a traumatic injury to the back of his head. He still supposedly had vital signs but died soon after at a local hospital.

The comments section of the story is where it gets very interesting. People are chiming in on how dangerous treadmills are and referencing Harry Reid's bout. They are speculating on how you fall on a treadmill (face first people presumed) and get an injury to the back of the lower head. Some said you may fall of the back and hit something behind the treadmill but it's typically the top of the head. Some people said that many people run backwards on treadmills and thus could fall with the back of your head toward the equipment. Some people make references to their wealth and the fact that Mexico isn't safe for people with money and position. Some people want to know where the surveilance video is of the gym. Some people want to know why it took 2.5 hours to find him and why a high-priced resort wouldn't have more people in a gym between 4 and 6:30 pm to see him. It is all weird. Here's the article: news.yahoo.com...

Some people noted that they heard he had a massive heart attack (I didn't see that), then an injury, then massive head trauma. It is possible that there was a hit on him...but why? Who knows. It is definitely tragic...and still most people are left thinking...this is VERY fishy. They are suggesting Mrs. Sandberg get him OUT of Mexico for another autopsy.) Anyone else following this story or have thoughts?

Also, not intended to be a knock on Yahoo, but if you read the story, the writer basically does a travel blog promotion for all the ammenities at the resort. An odd thing to throw into a story about a tragic death. Maybe the writer had a word count to meet. I don't know. What say you?

Google. Facebook. How many of these mega wealthy folks does that make now that have died, or dropped from view so suddenly?

I am sure it i just coincidence.

Good point. We just had the Google Exec in Nepal. His company, Survey Monkey, to my knowledge isn't on the bleeding edge front...but who knows when you add Facebook to the mix.

I saw this story when it first hit, and the very first story that hit was that he died of a sudden heart attack, then came the news stories of how great a guy he was, the accolades, etc.., now the strange story of the head injury on the treadmill. Now for me, here is where it gets REALLY weird.

The official said the accident took place at the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita and that the family had checked in on April 30.

But the Four Seasons issued a statement saying the incident did not happen on any of its properties and that David Goldberg was not registered as a guest in any of the rooms, villas or residences.

I guess we have to protect our tourist destination and make it look all pristine and never have an accident on the property ever.

Interesting point you're making about the Four Seasons. It seems that the person in the Yahoo thread was making a point of outlining the details of the resort. Then the Four Seasons says they weren't there. Is there another resort in that area that they could have been at and this was a big misunderstanding?

So the Four Seasons says they weren't guests there. The news story said they were at Palmasola at the Four Seasons Resort.

Possible but in the article the official stated this occurred AT the Four Seasons Resort and that the family checked in at the Four Seasons April 30th. It's certainly possible they got the wrong resort, but I think this might be more a matter of the resort not wanting people to know a death occurred there.

There is more to the story, I'm sure...

Just found an article saying that they stayed at a resort right next to the Four Seasons:

...But the 47-year-old tech veteran had actually been exercising inside a gym at the Palmasola, which is a private resort next door to the Four Seasons Punta Mita, according to a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office in Nayarit State...

More weirdness. Why would you go to the gym in the resort next door? What the hell? Why would they even know to look for him there?
