Whats so bad about a National ID card?

Ok seriously I see nothing wrong with a national ID card. Whats the difference between a national ID and the use of a drivers license as an ID? A national ID card only serves to consolidate the forms of ID already required by the government into one card allowing ease of transaction with the government..
Of course there is room for abuse but that is true of any system we could put in place.
