This thread is one of the reasons why I call it the idiot box . They aim the shows at anyone they can get to watch. It doesnt matter the subject or plot , just if they can get someone to watch..Why ? There is so much trash on TV nowadays. Everything from news to kids shows. I will not let my grandchildren watch even a lot of the shows on kids TV channels. Why ? They are degrading those as well now. I guess I am just living in the past where there was morality on TV.

I hate this show with a passion! Its just sickening.

What gets me about it the most is that its so socially acceptable. Then the same retards who watch this stupid show 10 times a day on pay tv, turn around and look at me like I've got serious issues when I'm blasting some Emimen song that makes mindless anti-female jokes. imo, there's a huge difference between some dude releasing anger by saying offensive things to piss off his ex and some tv show that realistically depicts brutal violent rapes. My very call back when someone gets all offended by me listening to an eminem song is " it's a joke fool, go watch SVU".

Having said that, I'm not convinced tv had much to do with the false accusations this girl made. I mean, I used to be obsessed with freddy krueger when I was I kid, but never had the urge to go cut people up with a glove with knifes attached.

I get what you're saying, but in this case the show had everything to do with this girls accusations. The things she claimed her teacher had done to abuse her had been pulled directly from the television show.

To everyone , thank you for reading and responding.

Do we know for certain that the teacher didn't watch too much SUV and copy the modus operondi he saw there? Has the girl recanted? Just seems like a pretty strange thing for a 11 to 13 year old girl to make up. On the other hand is the fact that her parents never noticed anything odd going on with her. Dunno which way to go on this one really.

If the girl actually experienced the type of brutality she clImed to have experienced, there's no way she'd escape the notice of her parents. There's no question in my mind that she'd just made it up.

Ah yes...it's never the fault of a criminal , always the fault of someone else.

SVU is a solid and long running show that tells the fictional stories of sex related crimes in a 1 hour time frame. Regardless of if you want to believe it or not every major city has an SVU division. It wouldn't take much effort to put you in contact with some of the officers from that division in my city and you can find out how low humanity can get.

For anyone thinking a TV show it's going to be 100% realistic within the confines of a 45 mins of storytelling is already going in with an agenda. It doesn't celebrate rape, crime or anything else that criminals do. It doesn't need to celebrate those things because humanity is perfectly capable on their own without having someone to blame.

How about this for once, sometimes a person is responsible for their own actions. I know it's hard to imagine that ever being the case in ATS land where criminals are never at fault

Of course SVU units exist, and they do great things for victims, and sometimes they don't. That being said, the television show Law & Order:SVU is likely nowhere close to what actually happens at a precinct, nor does it show the true plight of victims. The stories are sensationalized for people's entertainment. That does not make you a pedosadist for watching, or even enjoying the show.

Yes, this girl is wholly responsible for her actions; but, why is a young impressionable girl watching this show? It isn't children's entertainment, and as we all know, children are hugely impressionable and affected by what they see on TV. As an intelligent adult, you're able to watch this show, the whole time separating fact from fiction, but some young people aren't, especially without parental guidance.

I definitely didn't intend to make an excuse for the girl with my rant, sorry if it came across that way.

100% nothing at all for you to say sorry for.
This is a rant forum and your post, though i don't personally agree with it, was well written and is what you believe.

I don't expect fictional TV shows to give me the details but rather the essence of the story they are trying to tell. In the end, Ill back out because this is your thread and while you don't agree it doesn't give me the right to argue your rant..

You're the ideal television watcher.
Admittedly, I have a huge bias when it comes to television, and sometimes it gets my opinions flowing. I believe that, although television can sometimes tell a good story, it often fails at portraying reality. Unfortunately, there are plenty of people who spend more time experiencing life through their TV sets than actually experiencing the reality they believe it's showing them.

Here is the source. It goes into a bit more detail.

Thank you, I was just about to ask for that.

I don't watch these shows, but my wife loves murder porn shows, especially the ID channel. I always joke around, telling people I call it the "Idea" channel, and one day she'll do to me what they do to their spouses there. lol

Did you know that many Law and Order shows fill their plots with ACTUAL cases that have happened in the US? Naturally they change things about how the case went down including names and other things, but for the most part these are all real cases.

Though I do think it is funny that you are complaining about a L&U show. Law and Order is pretty damn tame compared to other stuff that is on tv.

In 2012, teacher Donald Barber of British Columbia faced allegations of rape and torture after a female student told police he had been sexually abusing her for years.

When police explained to the alleged victim that they couldn't press charges against Mr.Barber because there was no evidence to support the heinous allegations she had made, six weeks later she produced a hand written diary describing rapes, water boarding, being buried alive, etc.

After investigation, it was found that all allegations were taken directly from episodes of Law & Order: SVU. Mr.BArber had all ready been fired, his spotless reputation ruined, before these facts came to light. Mr. Barber is now suing, as he should.

My rant in this situation lies in the fact that this girls parents or guardians, what have you, had allowed her to watch fictionalize do accounts of rape, murder, torture, pedophelia, etc. Some might argue that since these things exist in the world, we shouldn't shield our children from them, but I do not believe fictionalized, dramatized accounts of horrendous acts do justice to victims, or do anything to educate people about justice, or sexual assault in general.

The child who accused her teacher in this case likely saw the attention afforded to victims of assault, and wrongly assumed she would get the same level of attention; and, in the influence of man made rape as entertainment, ruined a mans life.

What is the point of this show? It does nothing to showcase what real victims go through.
Also, who are the parents who take their children to an audition for roles on these shows? "It'll be fun, honey, all you have to do is pretend you were raped by a school teacher!" I can't even imagine.

This is a rant, so excuse any poorly made points. My main idea here is...Who decided that rape Sh ould be entertaining? Ugh.

I hope the girl in this real life case someday comes to realize just what she did to this man; for some reason I doubt she will.

Man every crime show has those situations.
That teacher should sue that girl and her family. He was proven innocent but he lost his job among other things.

As a life long resident of bc i have never heard about this before.

I would go after everything they have for ruining my life because their daughter is an attention whore.

Granted i dont know the whole story but from what i read. I would sue them into the ground.

Interesting. I live with someone who watches SVU all the time so I have ended up watching a lot of episodes, and while I did realize that they pulled their plots from national headlines, I had no ides that, for the most part these are all real cases. I figured maybe 10-15% Or 20% at most. But 51% or more? Wow they should donate some of their money to the actual vuctims whos stories they base the episode off of, if they don't already... or maybe thats why they change it just enough, so they don't have to? I could see an svu episode based on a scenario: person fakes being sexually abused so they can sell their story to sex crime drama show to collect the money promised to victims.

To me it makes sense. That is why most of the L&O episodes end the same ways. Husband always ends up killing the wife. Someone the person knew abducted the person. Etc. Because that is how the cases usually end in real life. Most crime cases aren't exciting Hollywood fare and are formulaic enough that you could make a bland television show about them. Hence L&O.

And you're question was answered by you

Why is she watching this? Go ask parents/caretakers/whoever cares for her. I'm not denying that access isn't easy, but my source of the blame is solely the child and the adults involved that should have either shielded her from SVU or tried to explain what SVU is.

Yes I 100% agree that some people are impressionable but again the precedent needs to be set by mom/dad (or whichever adult is responsible).
