I lived in Inkster for just shy of five years. From September 2009 to August 2014. In that five years I saw a very rapid decline in the city.
First the police were cut.
Then the school district dissolved.
Then the police cut more.
Worse and worse. More gangs, more drugs. More violence.
We had our home get shot up. Called the police, came and checked it out. Literal response? "Yup, that's a bullet hole." Our front window, couch, and
more shot up. Why didn't it get investigated? No money or time and bigger fish to catch.
Back in May 2014 an Inkster cop moved in across the street. In July his house was robbed in broad daylight. They stole his TV, some other electronics,
and (the kicker) the panel to his home alarm system.
We could literally watch people make drug deals from our front porch. A van would sit in the street all day. People would come, people would go. Five
or more times a day. Same with the park behind our house. One person would walk from one side, meet another in the middle coming from the other side,
shake hands, go back the way they came. Two years ago a little shanty town started to spring up in the park, but it got torn down pretty quickly. Last
spring a guy overdosed on heroin in the park.
We had it happen six times in seven months last year where the police chased someone into our street (a cul-de-sac) and wound up being a foot chase.
Four of those times the police asked me to let my dogs out to see if anyone was in our backyard.
I still go back there once a month for one reason or another. We still own the old house for tax reasons, so I like to go by, shovel the walk or cut
the lawn, etc... About two months ago I was nearly car jacked. Car pulled out of a driveway, blocking the road. I slammed on the brakes, stopped about
four houses away to see what they were doing. They pulled back into the driveway. I proceeded forward and they pulled out again, nearly hitting me.
Two guys jumped out. Already on edge, I had it in four wheel drive, floored it and hopped the curb.
I probably won't go back next month. Thinking of just letting the house go. No point in selling it, and not worth the insurance money.
Two tips if you do have to go to Inkster: Don't go unarmed and the Valero on Middlebelt north of Michigan has good, cheap gas. But I doubt a lot of
you could make it there. If you're willing to try, you can rent our property. Good luck...
