Identity (a young man's sonnet)

When all the fools have had their turn to be
the crimson sparkle in your tender gaze
and as a queen unequaled in degree
you wallow whimsically in worthless praise

until this shallow veil your conscience steals
and low, lamenting, lonely and afraid
the soul remaining like the dawn reveals
my humble frame emerging from the shade

But now beneath the mortal beauty lies
remembrance of a disregarded friend
who once believed in truth behind green eyes
So lo! Be not astonished in the end

when at my feet the kingly crown you lay
I waive it to the wind and walk away

Perfect iambic pentameter except for the last two lines, which perfectly emphasizes them.

Nice work.

Ummm...I wanted to thank you for the opportunity to read such a wonderful poem...It's a hard lesson...realizing that the one you placed all of your trust in...spurns such...It is a good salve for the ego though, to then walk away and never look back...

I enjoy your work and your talent...very refreshing...again...thank you for this glimpse into the depth...
