A stunningly cool find... This is Colossal

Photo by M. Elsevier Stokmans; Boeddhamummie (Drents Museum)

What looks like a traditional statue of Buddha dating back to the 11th or 12th century was recently revealed to be quite a bit more. A CT scan and endoscopy carried out by the Netherlands-based Drents Museum at the Meander Medical Centre in Amersfoort, showed the ancient reliquary fully encases the mummified remains of a Buddhist master known as Liuquan of the Chinese Meditation School. While it was known beforehand the remains of a person were inside, another startling discovery was made during the scan: where the organs had been removed prior to mummification, researches discovered rolls of paper scraps covered in Chinese writing.

The Liuquan mummy has since been transported to Hungary where it will be on view at the Hungarian Natural History Museum through May of 2015. (via Robs Webstek, Neatorama, Creators Project)

I guess that the picture is enhanced, instead of black and white, anyway that's a great find...I'm curious now too!

It's a CT (Computer Tomography) scan. They can construct a 3D grid volume of the contents of something organic, and then assign the densities to photo-realistic colors.

Amazing find - to think that that monk has been meditating for a thousand years

I always find it odd that when a body is "old", you no longer need to respect it and can put it on display here and there without much thought.

Regardless of design, it is someone's ornate "coffin/urn/etc" it belongs where it was originally put and if that place had to get destroyed it belongs in another temple/curchyard/mausoleum, not for public amusement in a museum.

Imagine if they dug up your grandma because she had a fancy urn or gold coffin and put her in a museum. Total lack of respect.
