I believe it's because they used to be called "Islamic state of Iraq and Syria" which would be ISIS, and often times trivial words like "of" "and" get left out of an acronym.

That would explain why it's not ISOIATL.

WE ALL know Isis was the name of an Egyptian goddess, and wife of Osiris. I'm betting the morons in the MSM forgot that, and this child was named after HER, most likely.

I understand where ISIL came from but the whole ISIS thing confused me.
