Can someone tell me how the people tell the cops what address to show up at?

The most common method is caller ID spoofing.

Caller ID service, however, is susceptible to fraud. Using a practice known as "caller ID spoofing," callers can deliberately falsify the telephone number and/or name relayed as the Caller ID information to disguise the identity of the calling party.

How can you possibly criticize them in responding to a purported call for help. They operated skillfully, and were very professional.

If they didn't respond, they'd be called lazy. Or worse, it'd be the real deal.

The real badguy is not the police in this story. Its the "swatter"

Ok, but how do they get their opponents phone number?
I play CoD online all the time but I've never worried about anyone getting my address or phone number. What am I not getting?

Usually combine a myriad of OSINT and social engineering attacks. A clan/gamer tag leads,to a website. The tag IDs,the member. All posts / links to social media can be "harvested." Once real name is known, its trivial to find a number. Picture metadata may contain phone number as well.

Many instances of swatting is from someone who knows an individual or at the very least knows where the individual lives. What made the individual in this case a target was because he was live streaming his gaming session through a streaming site. That often gives hackers an access point to obtain the information they need to get the phone number of their target.

What ever happened to the police doing some fact checking?

How exactly do you want them to investigate a call of an active shooter? Or a call saying "I just shot my dad, he's dead, think I'll shoot mom next because you're making me mad?"

Knock knock...yes, you called 911 saying you killed your parents, is everything okay?

Riiiight....

You realize you have been programmed to believe an "active shooter" is some dire situation that can break it anytime anywhere right?

These militarized police tactics are new. People alive today can remember when this stuff didn't exist. Which says a lot.

The disconnect with the world around us. More than likely contributes to the rare case of nutty people that do go off publicly.

But the most important thing is that people think this is necessary. You are buying into the programming.

People are saying that after the swatting, the dude was seemed doing normal on the stream. But next thing you know he makes a youtube video with him sobbing/crying.

Either he's taking advantage of this or his feelings are real. He should not have put up his crying video either way because it'll encourage more people to do it.

But swatting really needs to stop. If it were a 1 time thing then yeah, that's quite an awesome prank (still punishable)! But now it's just getting out of hands

well ya, I'm sure after the adreline goes down and the shock wears off it would be #ing traumatic. Ever had a cop stick his gun in your face, particularly when you're innocent? It's horrifying, you know how trigget happy U.S. cops are and in you're head you know they obviously have false information, hence the gun in your face. Thank god I'm not black, and I say that in a completely sad, somber, seriousness, because I don't know what the outcome would have been.

That was my thought how the heck do the cops end up the bad guy in this... If they shot the guy sure, otherwise it's the swatter that should be the bad guy.

They can't play with their toys if they check facts. As someone was already so kind to address, where is the logic in verifying information before storming a persons home. They get a call of an active shooter or someone claiming they just shot their dad, just roll up, drive a tank through the front door, and pew pew pew.

It shouldn't be so easy to get a swat unit to attack a dwelling.

In the videos I saw, I didn't see any SWAT teams. Granted I haven't watched every video out there, but what I saw was patrol officers wearing external body armor with patrol carbines, shotguns, and handguns.

Don't try this at home, kiddies, but as long as they're NOT checking, it ought to be cake to socially engineer the old surprise visit for those who are in charge of this sort of thing happening.

SWAT the SWAT training facility OIC. SWAT the DAs. SWAT the judges who stroke the warrants for this. SWAT the governor at his mistress' house. SWAT the US senators for that state. SWAT some cops. SWAT the police union president. The list of possibilities is long and entertaining.

Think of it as feedback. Feedback is a good thing. It brings us changes. As long as it's someone else's problem, people tend to minimize the impact of a situation. Give the people who can correct the issue a first-hand example of why it's a bad idea to have armed militarized police who don't bother to check things out because it's expedient. When it becomes THEIR problem, they'll be motivated to find a solution.

Besides which, if Joe Citizen has to put up with this with no recourse at all because cop, I'll bet you the governor can drop some corrective action on them they can't wash off with soap.

There are varying responses, the most common being the SWAT unit. You are correct though, sometimes it is patrol officers with armor and high powered weapons.

Doxing, finding out the persons true identity and address. All you need to do then is call the cops saying whatever to get them to go the address of the intended target
