as another poster stated in this thread...a terrorist just wants to kill and create terror

That is not what a "terrorist" wants, all this "they hate us cos of our freedom" is utter crap, if you take the IRA as a example there were plenty of members of the IRA who just wanted to go out and kill some soldiers. But the majority just wanted independent rule from the British crown they had what they saw as a legitimate struggle against the British that they were forced them to use violence. Islamic extremism is the same take the recent attacks in France, those guys did not want to just go out and kill and create terror, they wanted to stop what they see as the humiliation of their God.

Now we might not always understand or agree with why they commit acts of terror but its much more than them just wanting to go out and create some terror for the sake of it because they are all evil nasty people. Lots of groups we call "terrorist's" actually have some quite legitimate causes depending on your point of view.

There is no negotiating.

Rather than "negotiating" we should be talking about sitting across the table from them and talking, discussing ways to compromise to end bloodshed. That requires a little give and a little take from both sides, and it is not always possible. It may very well be that when it comes to many Islamic terrorist groups, lets take IS for example, our values are just too different to really ever meet them halfway, but there still may be some issues that we could negotiate for instance access to humanitarian aid in exchange for a temporary halt in bombing them for a few days.

Unless that negotiation is "OK...we agree to convert to Islam and follow all it's rules and any other rules you demand"

Very few Islamic terrorist groups actually want you to convert to Islam most of them when you really boil it down they just want a end to western intervention in the affairs of Muslim countries.

I'm on ATSmobile, so I apologize if this has been said already but...

INSURGENT GROUPS are not TERRORIST GROUPS. Get your FACTS straight!

Yup that's part of the problem on ATS, some difficulty in getting facts right.

Technically the United States does not list "The Taliban" as a designated terrorist organisation. It does list Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (The Pakistani Taliban) but that is not the same group that was running Afghanistan before 9/11.

The Taliban was absolutely NOT considered a terrorist organization by the US when Obama (through an intermediary) negotiated the release of Bowe "deserterface" Bergdahl.

It was a criminal act because he did it without congressional approval, not because of any terrorist ties.

I think you are incorrect about the Taliban. There are more links stating this also.
Terror Groups

The bottom line is the Taliban designation has changed with political winds. They've been called armed combatants, a terrorist group, an armed insurgent, and so on. The White House calls them one thing, state department calls them another, the media calls them whatever is hip that week.

They aren't, to my knowledge, a foreign terrorist organization, but they are a specially designated global terrorist group. Or an armed combatant. Different lists, different list owners, different spin.

They are going to do what THEY want until you tell them loudly what YOU want.

I actually agree with most of what you have stated. We have a long history of being the cause of much of the terrorism we receive. But where we are now, and what they want from us is not negotiation. Not AFTER what we have done. So now we have to deal with what is before us...good or bad...and they want revenge. Also...they want us to leave them alone to do as they please. We probably should have in the past, but I'm not sure we CAN now.

The 'Taliban' did not exist under the Reagan administration. It formed in the 90s. Well After Reagan was out of office.

That was the Afghan Mujahideen in 1983.

Huh learn something new everyday, I always thought we were funding the Taliban in the 80's to stop The Soviet Unions actions in Afghanistan.

'We' as in East, and West then that would be correct.

Anyone saying we thinking it was just the US ignores the real history.

Look up the Peshwar Seven, and the Tehran Eight.

The Soviet war in Afghanistan lasted over nine years from December 1979 to February 1989. Part of the Cold War, it was fought between Soviet-led Afghan forces against multi-national insurgent groups called the Mujahideen, mostly composed of two alliances – the Peshawar Seven and the Tehran Eight. The Peshawar Seven insurgents received military training in neighboring Pakistan and China,[8] as well as weapons and billions of dollars from the United States, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and other countries.[2][3][4][8][26] The Shia groups of the Tehran Eight alliance received support from the Islamic Republic of Iran. Early in the rule of the PDPA government, the Maoist Afghanistan Liberation Organization also played a significant role in opposition, but its major force was defeated by late 1979, prior to the Soviet intervention. The decade-long war resulted in the death of 850,000–1.5 million civilians[23][24] as well as causing millions of Afghans to flee the country, mostly to Pakistan and Iran

en.wikipedia.org...

The Tailiban did not exist until the 90s.

Anyone placing blame on the US alone is pushing intellectual dishonesty.

Obama's foreign policy can be summed up in just a few words.

"hands up, don't shoot."

Some people still have the assumption that what the US government says and does is the same.
