I've never been in the military this is a homage to some who have and is fiction on my behalf.
Here it is.
We met, what two years ago?
And yet I'm closer to you than anyone I've ever met.
We ran when they refused to tell us to stop.
We trained on every side of that rock.
Deployed to sand to dig ourselves in.
It was you who watched my very back.
I'll never forget all that you did.
When we embarked on that routine trip.
The sun watched in its intense glory.
As the grenades struck the pot holed concrete.
Markets scattered from the terror unleashed.
Children screaming as the firefight begins.
I'm hit in the leg and drop onto the street.
You leave your wall to come get me.
Your hands grab and pull me back towards that cover.
I know why you made that move, I'd have done the same.
It doesn't help, now in the states.
Your child is fatherless but not fully.
We're two hearts now intertwined.
Locked in a way that I love but can't repay.
I'll do my best, to make you proud.
Sad but happy to be able to do something today.
Tormented because it should have been me.
I'll see you every time that I try to sleep.
You are my nightmare and my distant brother.
