U.S. prison population largest in world

With a record-setting 2 million people now locked up in American jails and prisons, the United States has overtaken Russia and has a higher percentage of its citizens behind bars than any other country.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
The latest statistics support that view. The new high of 2,019,234, announced by the Justice Department in April, underscores the extraordinary scale of American imprisonment compared to most of the world.

During the 1990s, the United States and Russia -- a far poorer country emerging from totalitarian rule and beset by official corruption and organized crime -- vied for the dubious position of the highest incarceration rate on the planet.

But in the last few years, Russian authorities have carried out large-scale amnesties to ease overcrowding in disease-infested prisons, and the United States has emerged unchallenged into first place, at 702 prisoners per 100,000 population. Russia now has 665 prisoners per 100,000.

United States imprisons at a far greater rate than developed Western nations and many impoverished and authoritarian countries. On a per capita basis, according to the best available figures, the United States has three times more prisoners than Iran, four times more than Poland, five times more than Tanzania and seven times more than Germany.

My question is this: based on our current path of ultra-right-wing conservatism, how much worse do you think it will get? It's also important to note, as with everything "righteous" these days, it's closely married to business - one of the fastest growing & most lucrative market segments of the building industry is prison construction. The prisons, as is the case of where
I live upstate, are epicenters of blue collar industry - construction and on site staff jobs. That's not even accounting for the prison labor- near zero cost workforce being applied towards state projects.

The prison labor force, bt, is helping the states w/ their budgets problems. It's win-win

"a far poorer country emerging from totalitarian rule and beset by official corruption and organized crime"

Well, the only real difference between russia and the US is that the US is far richer. The rest of this still applies to US.

"how much worse do you think it will get?"

Oh, it'll get much, much worse if we continue to be ruled by facists. Of course that's saying it already isn't bad. Hell, they already admit to having that "terrorist" concentration camp down in G.Bay, Cuba. Now that FCC thing gets passed which basically allows for the centralisation of the media.

Yeah, what a terrible situation...

In the EU, where we have the lowest imprisonement rate from the world and where the police don't have not so much power, criminals are everywhere and don't fear the " justice " or the police.

Honnest citizens ( who are all disarmed, of course ) don't know what to do when they're facing these " poors and misunderstood criminals ".

In Belgium, when you kill someone, you're sentenced to MAXIMUM 10 years of prison, and you're sure that you'll be out of jail just after 3 or 5 years.

Last week, a woman, helped by her lover, payed some criminals. They killed her husbands ( 5 shots in the back ), and they are still free. They will not go in prison
But if I kill a man who try to come at night in my home, even if he's armed, I WILL GO IN PRISON FOR 15 OR 20 YEARS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where is the " justice " BT ?????????????????????

Yep, Id have to agree.

America is naturally a violent society, so we will have more people to lock up.

We could start clearing out death row. Stop using soldiers as guina pigs, and use deathrow inmates instead. Clear up the population problem really quick.

If we have to live in an organized society, than police power and prisons are absolutely necessary.

The reason we have so many offenders is because drugs are still illegal. If we legalize drugs, we solve our prison problem because most of the criminals in prisons are non-violent offenders.

Hmmm,You know BT they were building prisons under Clinton too.It has nothing to do with who is in the Whitehouse. There will always be crime.I just wish politicians or white collar criminels got put in the same prisons everyone does.
I find it unlikely Ken Lay is going to end up in San Quentin or any other maximium security prison.

Ok this is omitting a LOT of information.

So here's ALL of it

Russia by the way, still number one for incarcerations, you have to take into account just how much fewer people are in Russia than the US.

China I'm surprised has only 1.4 million incarcerated, while we have 1.6, but that's probably due to the famous Chinese Gulags which are work camps and China is not known for reliability on their returns of their total imprisoned.

Yes, and if we think about North-Korea, this country IS a prison. The whole country. We can say that NK has 23 million peoples in jail.

The U.S. (in general), has overloaded the prison system to the point that the officials are now trying to transport inmates to various facilities in other states. In light of the fact that this cannot always be accomplished, early parole is being considered as an alternative.

You wanna know why we don't need a police state in Europe?
It's because our people get on with each other.

Yeah sure we have extremists in our society but the vast majority of us behave ourselves and give our governments no reason to police us.

In Europe we don't hate our neighbours. Not only those in the next country. But those who live with us.

Wait Leveller, you must have been born less than 60 years ago because you're missing a little thing called World War2.

Besides, it's that "we don't give our government reasons to arrest us" that it's so easy for Hitler's and Napoleon's to just pop up all over Europe.

The Romans quelled the Mainland "individuality" that is what kept one almighty god from ruling the land.

To think they have hundreds of more prisons waiting to be used this very moment.
