More Drugs in Water Can Chemically Castrate More Men

loam's 2009 thread, MEN: You are being chemically castrated first flagged the issue. The evidence has mounted abundantly since. Now, a new study from the University of Milwaukee-Wisconson shows that environmental Metformin is the latest assault on our men's endocrine systems. (True, the researchers focus on fish, but as loam showed - such 'endocrine disruptors' also affect human males' endocrine systems, sexual parts and sexual (dys)function.)

...the diabetes drug metformin was the most common personal care product found by researchers with the School of Freshwater Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

More importantly, according to their latest research, the levels of metformin were so high that the drug could be disrupting the endocrine systems of fish.

...(Metformin) is so ubiquitous it can easily be found in water samples taken two miles off the shore of Lake Michigan.

...The drugs get into the sewage and eventually the lake because they are not broken down completely after they are consumed and then excreted.

....Other commonly found substances include caffeine, sulfamethoxazole, an antibiotic, and triclosan, an antibacterial and antifungal found in soap and other consumer products.

....The study ....found gene expression suggesting disruption of the endocrine system of male fish, but not females. In essence, the males were producing biochemicals that are associated with female minnows. The biochemicals are precursors to the production of eggs.

Metformin and endocrine disruption is not the only problem of course. Our water is full of all kinds of drugs and chemicals. Another big concern is the level of antibiotics in waterways near pig farms.

The UWM research confirms what others have found regarding prescription drugs showing up in America's lakes, rivers and streams, said Melissa Lenczewski, an associate professor of geology and environmental geosciences at Northern Illinois University.

For years, it was assumed that the volume of water in the Great Lakes was so enormous that any drugs that got through treatment facilities would be diluted to the point that they would not pose a problem, said Lenczewski, who was not a part of the UWM study.

That theory itself now is being diluted.

Even more concerning are the much higher levels of antibiotics that are being put into rivers and streams near pig farms where the drugs are used to produce larger animals, she said.

In addition, strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria also have been found in water near those farms, she said.

"It is very alarming how much we are putting drugs out there in the environment," she said.

.....Don't know what else to say here except the piper is already starting to collect.

The arrogance of people defending modern "medicine" and attacking holistic treatment is astonishing.

Say what you want about the effectiveness of these holistic treatments but they don't have destructive side effects and disrupt the chemistry of the Earth's biosphere.

Keep tinkering. I wonder what the next intelligent life form to arise on Earth will be? I'm going with birds. Give them another million years and they'll be constructing nukes with articulated feet.

So.. Are the American people ever going to have their day in court? I think if it ever comes to light and people can prove their government purposely knowingly gave them harmful chemicals then surely they would have to pay everyone at least? What if their toxins are proven to have caused severe disability to the point where someones life is altered to the point to where they cannot work? What about the countless troops our government has tested on?

I agree to an extent. I think holistic medicines should be tried first and foremost before any modern medicine is tried. My family uses almost all holistic methods for health reasons and have found that we are at the doc's office less than half as much for ailments as others around us (friends/family/etc..)

I do think modern medicine has it's place in areas such as orthopedics and similar, as well as pain reduction for those that actually need it...there are other areas, but these are two of the most prominent I can think of.

Holistic medicines need to be given a better chance, but I have found that in a lot of cities there are plenty of options in this field with a LOT of medically trained and licensed MD's actually using holistic methods combined with current methods as a hybrid of sorts.

But Soficrow, haven't you heard? Humans are too insignificant, small, and helpless to possibly have any widespread negative impacts on our environment!

This is just more evil rich science funded by those rich aristocrat scientists! I mean, there's still snow on some parts of the planet and they want us to believe in global warming; now they expect us to believe in this and antibiotic-resistant bacteria all at the same time?! HAH AHAH!

There is definitely a lot of chemicals in our water.

I put a tray of water on my old-school steam radiator heater to keep the air humid.

When the water gets to about 8% or so, the water turns into a sludge, with many solid crystal formations. This tells me there is a very high amount of dissolved matter in our water. There should be a budget for independent water testing in our country.

Check it yourself.
If you don't like what you read, or don't trust the government, pay for it yourself, you can pick and choose where to get it tested and what you want to test for.

I'd say a person dying from using a holistic remedy that is really just a placebo is a pretty destructive side effect. Plus if they don't work, then what's the point of doing them anyways regardless of the environmental effects?

So drugs in our water chemically castrate men. Then, men with erectile dysfunction get angry, blame women and get sexually violent. They expand the market for violent porn, and normalize sexualized violence and hate sex.

What's next? Besides species extinction?

That's because there's nothing to them. Adding more water to the ocean isn't going to hurt anything, true. But it isn't going to do much for your illness, either.

It's an uncomfortable topic I know, but the sexual terrorism is getting really out of hand. Everywhere.

I never read the article, but at what age does this happen? I would like to warn my wife. lol

Edit: Seems like a good excuse if I want to beat her up a bit! Why do people insist on making excuses for cowards that gravitate towards domestic abuse??

ED is no longer strictly age-related. 50% of men over 40 have erectile dysfunction, and growing numbers under 40 are getting the problem. Worse, more and more baby boys are being born with teenie-tiny penises and other sexual dysfunctions that don't show up 'til later.

The main culprit is endocrine disruptors -chemicals and drugs- in our food and water.

You should read loam's article. Then get mad.

It's too bad that nearly everything that contains endocrine disrupters can find it's way back into the water supply.

A wide range of substances, both natural and man-made, are thought to cause endocrine disruption, including pharmaceuticals, dioxin and dioxin-like compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls, DDT and other pesticides, and plasticizers such as bisphenol A. Endocrine disruptors may be found in many everyday products– including plastic bottles, metal food cans, detergents, flame retardants, food, toys, cosmetics, and pesticides.

Oh well. At least my town has RO water, so this isn't much of a concern to me. With the environmental regulations being constantly updated and the goal posts constantly moving up, it will soon be law to have RO, nano or ultrafiltration.

Oh no. Water is NOT the only source of contamination. Common hygiene products, household cleaners and materials, plastic containers all contain endocrine disruptors and ... the list goes on. The problem is not even close to being "fixed."

Right that's why I included a link and quoted with a list. I only meant that water borne endocrine disrupters are not a concern to me.

Gotcha. Sorry. I just focused on the idea that you seemed to be saying it would all go away with adequate filtration. My bad..

The USA has one of the high levels of drug usage (prescription and otherwise) and a large portion of the nations water comes from ground waters and rivers. The concept that drugs flushed down the drain (or in urine) stays in close contact with the population is in no way comparable to global warming. Most communities spray reclaimed water on park lawns which then have young children and families congregating in the vicinity later.

Sarcasm yes, but the problems are very different in nature.

Soficrow it is interesting you are just bringing this up as other outlets have already begun selling this as something good.

Since we are being sarcastic, the feminism is cheering this as a good healthy alternative to being born male!
Men Can Live 20 Years Longer... But There's A High Cost
io9.com...

[Hamilton and Mestler] compared the lifespans of 297 castrated inmates at a Kansas institution for the mentally retarded with those of 735 intact males at the same facility. The castrated males had gone under the knife at ages from 8 to 59 years old, with the average age ranging from 12 (!) in 1898 to 30 in 1923. They didn't vary markedly from intact inmates in terms of IQ, type of mental disability, and so on, suggesting there had been no firm criteria for the operation other than possibly your getting on the hospital staff's nerves — too bad if you were an inmate but lucky for science, since except for castration the two groups were indistinguishable.

Result: the castrated inmates on average lived 13.6 years longer than the intact ones (55.7 vs 69.3 years). What's more, the earlier you were castrated, the longer you lived.

See, this castration is for your own good, LoL.

I think framedragged's sarcasm is pretty funny, "there's still snow on some parts of the planet and they want us to believe in global warming; now they expect us to believe in this and antibiotic-resistant bacteria all at the same time?!" ...Speaks to peoples' inability to, um, multi-task.

Anyway - there's always gonna be someone pointing out the silver lining. Downside: You can't get it up. Upside: You'll live longer.

Then there's this one (a bit older). Downside: The human race is going extinct 'cuz males can't reproduce. Upside: Technology can fix the problem. (Maybe.)
