It's been about a week I bought this game. Never saw or played something like this before. It takes you to the hypothetical scenario many times discussed on ATS. It goes as close as a game can go to the real deal. It's just regular people trying to survive, not tough guys with machine guns.

In This War Of Mine you do not play as an elite soldier but rather a group of civilians trying to survive in a besieged city; struggling with lack of food, Medicine and constant danger from snipers and hostile scavengers. The game provides an experience of war seen from an entirely new angle.

The pace of This War of Mine is imposed by the day and night cycle. During the day snipers outside stop you from leaving your refuge, so you need to focus on maintaining your hideout: Crafting, Trading and taking care of your Survivors. At Night, take one of your civilians on a mission to Scavenge through a set of unique Locations for Items that will help you stay alive.

This War Of Mine provides an experience of war seen from an entirely new angle. For the very first time you do not play as an elite soldier, rather a group of civilians trying to survive in a besieged city. During the day snipers outside stop you from leaving your refuge, so you need to focus on maintaining your hideout. At night you get a chance to scavenge nearby locations for items that will help you stay alive.

Make life-and-death decisions driven by your conscience. Try to protect everybody from your shelter or sacrifice some of them longer-term survival. During war, there are no good or bad decisions; there is only survival. The sooner you realize that, the better.

Not a chance to save your game in case you make a mistake, you have to deal with your wrong decisions and dramatic consequences. After 14 days, my last man, hungry, wounded and victim of depression, committed suicide hanging himself. Yeah, all the horrors of war are displayed in this game. You'll find yourself saving a woman about to be raped by a soldier or opening the door to a kid looking for medicine for his mother. So consider that before you let the kids play it.

The game is available on Steam, and cost less than 20 dollars. Here 2 trailers :

Its definitely a good game. Needs a expansion pack or two. a underground railroad of sorts, hiding people/searches/etc. instead of nighttime off screen shelter raids, would be interesting to have em occasionally in daytime. deal with just getting robbed or fight for what you got kinda thing

I got this too and so far have really enjoyed it.

It's really interesting to see the group falling apart psychologically as they question each others actions or even seeing the physical affect of tiredness and hunger.

My kids are obsessed with minecraft, so of course I first thought this was related to that somehow.

Imagine my surprise to see what it actually is. I'm always on the lookout for a good affordable game like this so I think I'll likely check it out.

Quick question: what's the "creep" factor? Do you find yourself jumping at things popping up on screen or anything? I play on a laptop for PC games and don't want to worry about knocking it off my lap.

S&F for the find

Well, the first couple games were disastrous, but like any game really, once you learn the mechanics of it, it becomes easy.
So, now it poses like no challenge to me. I find if anyone is sad for more than a day at the beginning, I am failing. The game needs I suppose, more random factors to keep replay value. I still play it now and then, but mostly just to try to get a new best personal goal (try to turn it into like..survivalist tycoon or some such)

Still, brilliant game. I do hope more games like this come out. They did moral decisions properly.

No jumping at all, period. It is not a horror game, it is a survival game. It may make you feel sad, surprised at what you can do, or what you should have done, etc..but no..

actually, minecraft has a ton of creep factor. lol..that game can frighten the hell out of you. nothing like being low on health deep in some cave, and on your left ear hear a hissing sound right next to you

That's what I'm talking about lol.

My kids are little guys and I don't think a day goes by that they play that I don't hear at least one "AHHHHHH!!!" from them lol. Not really my thing as I don't want to chuck my laptop across the room!

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely check it out now

I know what you mean, but don't think it could happen with this game. But it could emotionally mess you a bit watching you characters suffering and die after many days making progress.

I know what you mean there. I don't game a whole lot, but the whole mass effect trilogy was probably my first time feeling any sort o emotional connection to a game. I'm not at all against getting into a game on that level, I just don't want to be thinking ah crap somebody died and holy crap now I'm being eaten by a pack of wolves!

I don't play many games but this is something that can show teens and young adults the real side of war. I really can't stand that the best selling video games are usually the Call of Duty types. It seems to me they glorify war to get bodies to enlist. While war is sometimes necessary, it is not always the solution. I have to give my thumbs up on this one.

Yes, that's right. The game seems to be inspired by the Siege of Sarajevo, Bosnian War (1992-1996). Nothing hollywoodean at all.

It's a start. Maybe they can make it a series.

I actually seen this game months ago, I never bothered looking into it. I thought it was going to be another shooter, realy all I did was go from the title of the game and a few pictures I seen a while ago. But from that gameplay vid link it looks way different then what I envisioned it would be about. Unfortunately I am trying to stay away from videogames for a time, but maybe at some latter date, if nothing it looks like its a bit different then the usual mold of games.

It is. Definitely don't know where the game will takes us, I reached a part when you can manufacture military stuff, maybe they will start a revolutionary war.
