www.gmail.com 404?

Anybody else getting a 404 for the entire www.gmail.com domain? Did Google forget to pay their bill?

I wonder if you're getting a 404, or an actual failure to respond from the server.

If you're getting a 404... Then there's something terribly wrong at Google and someone just got fired.

If you're not actually connecting to the server, but are just getting an error page that your browser generates, then you have DNS problems.

Do this:
Hold down your Windows key ( between Ctrl & Alt ) and press R - this opens up the 'Run' dialog.
Type in 'cmd' - this opens a command prompt.
Type 'ping www.gmail.com' and press enter - this attempts to look up gmail's IP and query the echo service at that IP.

If the above 'ping' returns 'Could not find the host', then you have a DNS issue. If it starts handing back response times, then you either have a browser issue, or again... someone at Google is getting fired.

Depending on your results I should be able to help you out of the woods.

And it pings successfully with very short round trips.

Its happening on two platforms here so it is not malware.

But I'm not sure how you got redirected to that URL. After the normal redirects I experience, I get the following; you might give it a spin:

That 404s too. www.gmail.com is their main gmail location and it is the first hit on a google search so I'm guessing there is going to be a lot of people (in my area at least) scratching their heads.

I get a little leary about phishing when using other results I'm not familiar with but this goes to a login page: accounts.google.com... b%2F0%2FAddMailService&followup=https%3A%2F%2Faccounts.google.com%2Fb%2F0%2FAddMailService

So... Anything that falls under the 'google.com' TLD ( top level domain )( mail.google.com, accounts.google.com, analytics.google.com, etc. ) is as safe as anything you're accustomed to landing on at Google... Possibly moreso than 'gmail.com', even - as you'll note that 'gmail.com' redirects to 'mail.google.com' ( which is where the site actually resides ).

I'm a little curious what URL it claims you're looking for when you go to mail.google.com as opposed to gmail.com - if it's the same 'about.html', then there is very much something wrong at Google - but in general this is pretty peculiar... Myself and a number of other people resolve the site fine; I can hit it from here in California, and similarly over a remote desktop connection to a computer in Chicago... My server in chicago does return the same URL you're landing on - 'https://www.gmail.com/intl/en/mail/help/about.html' - which seems to be the 'What's a gmail' page; which seems reasonable enough.

The fact that you're getting a 404 on this same page almost says to me that you are getting phished... When you ping www.google.com, what IP do you get back?

I get 74.125.239.147 - you should get the same or very similar...

I have several computers on remote desktop as well, using different ISPs. I'll give one or two a try.

So from one of my remote computers using a different ISP in a different community I ping google at 74.125.225.17 and gmail also 404s.

And yet from another computer in another nearby community, using yet a different ISP I ping 74.125.226.119 and gmail 404s too. I'm thinking its not me.

It looks like the 216 IP belongs to my ISP but the other two should be valid.

Looks like the issue has been resolved. Things are presently back to normal.

My YouTube account works fine. No errors. No 404s.
