every drug has some sort of side effect.
to imply this one did not or would not work and it would kill you is a big stretch.

so all these drugs on the market, they dont produce any side effects during trials?
those side effects only come after approval to go to market then?

All drugs have side effects. The difference is we know what these are because we have run safety and efficacy trials.

What exactly is the position you're defending here? Are you saying that they shouldn't safely and carefully examine the potential side effects of this vaccine?

Do you think that Fluoxetine and the countless derivatives have been tested with the same rigor you are defending here?

im saying they should not have stopped for some people getting mild joint pain 2 weeks later.
im saying they should have kept going with the trials and carefully examine the potential side effects

What, keep the trial going after unexpected side effect occur and just see what happens? "Oh look, turns out this one causes acute kidney failure. Oh well!". Makes perfect sense.

Connecting anterior pain in a few subjects with kidney failure is jumping the shark.

I don't know why so many people on ATS are so smug and say silly things especially when the information they are basing their OPINIONS on are so vague.

First of all I would say that if they halted the study due to joint pain, it was more then likely more serious then simply being uncomfortable. I don't know for a fact of course with the vague information in the reports, but I suspect they examined the joint pain and realized it may have had an underlying cause that would not be good, such as chronic inflammation or even structural damage to the joints. Depending on how severe the underlying damage it could possibly result in arthritis, maybe even joint failure and paralysis.

And that is the thing. This vaccine is being tested not to cure people with Ebola, but to treat people making them resistant to Ebola. Meaning that if you have Ebola and the trade off was joint damage but your life was saved that is one thing, but if you get the vaccine and don't have Ebola and may never get Ebola but still end up crippled, it is hardly a good trade off.

And that is what most of medicine is about, risk versus reward. And if the risk out weighs the reward it is not considered a viable option.

That is true, but we also learn from precedents. Probably why they are being more cautious this time.

You seem to be intimately aware of all the possible ramifications of the problems discovered so far in this trial. Oh wait, you're not. I have faith that the scientists involved know what they're doing compared to your uninformed gung-ho speculation.

I don't know what's sadder: ATS' inability to read or ATS' lack of knowledge when it comes to vaccines. First the trials are only suspended, not cancelled. They want to look into the joint pain to determine what's causing it, how long it lasts, and whether or not it hints at more serious issues. Also, vaccines aren't treatments for a disease. They're a preventative measure. If you already have the disease a vaccine is not going to do anything for you.

ATS can read very well. The premise of the OP hinges upon the concept that the tests do not resume as scheduled - and that the statement of rescheduling is a potential red-herring.

I've placed a sticky note on my computer desktop to check this again in early February to see if trials have resumed or not. Barring any total systems failure ( I use notes because my memory is usually overwhelmed by real life ) we'll see if my supposition is correct or not.

ATS is a fun place sometimes. You post straight news and people get angry that you didn't spin a conspiracy angle into it. But if you venture out on a limb and toss in a tad bit of potential conspiracy you get nailed for not reporting straight news.
