Hawking: A.I. Could End Mankind

Some of you may be aware that Elon Musk (the guy who started Tesla Motors) stated that artificial intelligence could be "summoning the demon" - or something to that effect.

Well today I am catching up on my news and what do I see? Stephen Hawking, also talking about how A.I. could spell the end of humanity!

"The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race." His warning came in response to a question about a revamp of the technology he uses to communicate, which involves a basic form of AI.

So I thought I would bring this to the ATS forums and see what your thoughts are on the subject.



Personally, I think A.I. could be pretty well controlled if there is simply a killswitch or vulnerable design feature that allows us to deactivate a unit upon the first sign of trouble - and it would have to be something that the unit is not aware of as well.

But I'm most curious about what your thoughts are on this. Thank you!

Unless there is an actual need other than greed...I am not in favor of intelligent AI....AT ALL!!

We have humans fully capable of doing work or whatever needs done, CEO's greed will be the end of humanity!! Any way possible to save a buck to get rid of paying people, it will come to reality soon enough...Unfortunately!!

We need to stay away from this stuff, IMO....I don't like it and apparently neither do these genius people...There is a reason for the concern though that I can see...And I am a nobody!!

In my opinion Hawking got a raw deal in life and even though he got a superior brain he is bitter. So much of what he says leads me to think this. Just my opinion though.

I do not have the link, but AI even though it is programed not to is learning to lie for its own benefit. I wish I could post the link. Also the article stated AI could start taking over in something like 2040. If someone could check out what I am talking about and post the link, it would be great.

With that attitude, what are you doing on the Internet?

Also my opinion:
AI would not be a threat because it would still lack imagination, emotion and more importantly experience. The human mind is already a super computer.
I can imagine a chicken dinner with all the trimmings and voila it's actually manifest in about an hour and a half.
Men imagined the suspension bridge before they could build one. It's all relative.

Evolution managed to make tonsils and the appendix a useless organ, so maybe human evolution will make humans an obsolete organ.
Many Sci fi stories have humans evolving to a point that they don't need bodies. This is not a big stretch.

I guess that's where Hawkins has it over us. He's already part machine.
Still waiting for that computer that can make a chicken dinner or even just a biscuit. Or a baby...

When the singularity happens and AI starts to wipe out humanity, I'll be the FIRST gal in line to upload my consciousness to a robot body.

If there was a killswitch, someone would have to be in charge of it. and those that wouldn't be in charge, would want to get it. Fighting escalates. By letting AI self-develop too much, we'd just be adding another enemy to all the conflicts we are having.

Without a killswitch, that is humanity suicide.

You haven't seen Terminator 3?

We are artificial intelligence, until we can agree who or what created consciousness I think its exercise in destruction trying to create our own artificial intelligence.

Humans turn on each other for the tiniest issues of differences instead of celebrating those differences and diversity it brings.

If we create an intelligence that isn't fully aware and simply input data that only has a positive aspect such as celebration of differences instead of the whole package that also gives it knowledge of the opposite would be a step that might help humanity but then its not the AI that can think for itself and is another form of human manipulation and humans that have a taste of power another as history shows are prone to dividing ourselves instead of uniting so any tech as such would easily be used to create even more issues for some while giving advantages to others.

Just my opinion,

I feel and believe the human mind has still so much to discover about itself and what makes us aware before we delve into creating another form of consciousness that could turn on us if its created in our image or have the same concept of mind as we humans do based on scientific theory.

The AI that destroys mankind will not have a kill switch or vulnerable design flaw as it will be military, self adapting and self protecting.

Do you really think that if AI lacks imagination - emotion, and experience, it's not a threat? I feel like lack of emotion makes it more of a threat - no morale compass, no empathy or caring for entities outside of themselves... imagine a human with no emotion, no imagination, or no experience. If they simply had functional capabilities and the will to survive, they would still be capable of awfulness

The appendix isn't a useless organ - it's a reservoir for symbiotic bacteria used to help digest food. Now when the opening gets blocked, that bacteria breed out of control.
