Governments all around the world use malware and spyware to keep tabs on people, from visitors to residents. But a security researcher's tool can now determine if your computer is infected with spyware. The Detekt tool was developed by Berlin-based security researcher Claudio Guarnieri and supported by several human-rights groups. Detekt is checks for malware that is often used against journalists, activists and other people frequently targeted by governments.

theres alot of pro privacy software flying around right now, mesh network programs like opengarden, and the latest
to join the movement is detekt. I'm just wondering how legit this is.

I figure they're all infested with rootkits. Not touching them with 10 foot poles.

To run the tool, you have to be disconnected from the internet and give it temporary admin rights. It's a quick scan and looks for signatures of DarkComet RAT, FinFisher FinSpy, ShadowTech RAT, Gh0st RAT trojans etc. I'm guessing that it also checks port activity to see if any of these types of malware are trying to communicate.

These Trojans allow remote-administration from parts unknown and have murky origins. They are thought to represent cyber-warfare/espionage tools under control of certain nations.

For the vast majority of us, it isn't the governments who we need to worry about. It's the organised criminals who can conceivably empty your bank account or destroy your credit rating. Likewise, governments aren't motivated to inject spyware on the computers/tablets/phones of the average citizen. They don't need to as all of us in 'five eyes' nations appear to have our web activities recorded and stored from the outside.

Aside from the double-think of conspiracy, I don't see why Detekt shouldn't be legit. A more important question might be: Can it keep up with the cutting edge of surveillance Trojans?

Run it as admin and give it a go. Mine came up clean and I didn't expect any other result. Kasperskey are back to offering free malware scanners which can be rum alongside AVG Free, ClamVirus Free etc.

I'm sure it's legit, at least as much as any other such scanner. I'm not sure how effective it is, though. I have a rather large directory that contains (among other things) source code, binaries, and all manner of modified and forked versions of various RATs (including more than one of those listed), and it came up clean. None of them ate fully compiled or active on this computer, but I would still think it ought to catch something....
