DOUGLAS AIR-2A "Genie"
The AIR-2A is an unguided air-to-air rocket with a nuclear warhead. Development began in 1955 by Douglas and the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory under the code name "Ding Dong." First launch with a live warhead occurred on July 19, 1957, by a F-89 at an altitude of 15,000 feet over Yucca Flats, Nevada. The rocket was detonated by ground command. USAF observers standing unprotected under ground zero (directly under the burst) suffered no ill effects. The warhead has a yield of 1.5 kt (equivalent to 1,500 tons of TNT) and a lethal radius in excess of 1,000 feet. The Genie was used operationally on the F-106 Delta Dart, F-101B Voodoo and F-89J Scorpion.

Length 9 feet, 8 inches
Diameter 17.5 inches
Span 40 inches
Launch weight 822 lbs.
Propulsion Thiokol TU-289 solid propellant rocket motor, 36,000 lbs. of thrust
Speed 2,100 mph
Range 6.2 miles
Ceiling 50,000 feet

Wow!

"Ceiling 50,000 feet "

Do you think this is high enough to attempt to intercept a UFO? Been around since 1957 (probably years before), so what if they developed this to attempt to shoot down a UFO?

hmm i think it could be MK but why would you use a nuke? wouldnt it be easier just to use an emp blast to fry there circutry? then again who said aliens use surcetry like we do and an emp wouldnt effect them so i guess blowing them to hell with a nuke would work.

Just one question though. If they detonated a nuke at the 50,000 ceiling what would the ground effects be? and would they even use it if the craft was coming down in the LA reagion or over NY or any other highly populated land mass??

They have used nukes in the upper atmosphere, during a project to manipulate weather, in fact it turns out they only screwed up the ionoshpere and blew open our pretty blue blanket!

1.5 kilotons yield is very very small, and as mentioned in the article, only has 1000 meter danger radius... if used at high altitude, wouldnt cause any damage on the ground. Also, there would be no fallout (fallout is actually from material on the ground, dirt, debris, ect, that comes down irradiated. The bomb itself is vaporized in the explosion so it doesnt contribute any fallout)

Don't forget seedy_sid, they've been spraying chemtrails over major metropolitan areas now for decades. These air-to-air nukes are the least of our concerns!!!!

Regarding why they'd use nukes- remember, alot of reports of UFOs are that they are constructed of an advanced material that is extremely resistant to blast impact. Maybe a air-to-air nuke would throw off the guidance system somehow, given the blast and resulting shockwave. Although the reports of the Roswell 1947 crash state that most of the craft was intact, with only structural damage done. I wonder if they tried to shoot it down, rather than the conventional lightning bolt story.

Actually MK you just pointed out something odd, If lightning damaged the roswell craft then surely an EMP blast would do the same amount of circutry damage to a craft. If ya think about it what damage would lightning do to a craft if it wasnt electronic based??

Maybe because WE are the ones building these things?

For GOD's SAKE!
These aren't dogfighting missiles! The Phoenix would be more suited and there is also nuky versions of the Falcon and Super Falcon.

actually those missiles were designed to be fired into a large formation of Soviet Bombers, so that one missile would destroy many bombers

Used to destroy formations?
BS!!
1500 meters would take out one bomber, maybe two.
*smells a cover story*

My Uncle is a Lt. Col. in the USAF and flew F-106's until the early 90's, when the Guard unit he commanded switched over to F-15's. I have seen the F-106 close up (sat in the cockpit - cool!) and have seen the weaponry. "Sixes" usually were equipped with 4 Falcon missiles - 2 IR and 2 radar guided. The Genie missile was not normally carried as it had a low yeild nuke as it's warhead. The Genies were always kept in a special bunker some distance from the flight line.

The purpose behind the Genie was to shoot at large Soviet bomber formations and disrupt their attack. Even a near miss would be fatal to most soviet aircraft circa 1955-1960, due to crummy construction and the EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) generated by the warhead. BTW, the preferred tactic was to establish radar lock, fire the weapon, than do a reverse Immelman at full throttle (dive upside down and reverse your course) and go supersonic to avoid the blast effects.

My Uncle said he shot an inert Genie at a "William Tell" exercise back in the 70's - he said it was a huge rocket and the blast/smoke could really screw up your plane if you didnt immediately pull away.

A nuke attack at very high altitude would destroy probably all satellites.
But what is high?
Some layer in the atmosphere would enhance the emp pulse and spread it all over the globes upper atmosphere.
I think it was in the 50's that the usa conducted high altitude nuke tests and destroyed by accident the 4 existing satellites at that time.
I read this once in a science magazine.

yeah, if its detonated in the ionosphere the explosion has nowhere to go so it goes into its true form of energy - EMP and spreads out over large distances.

This was back in the day when US intelligence was fooled into believing that the Soviets were constructing massive numbers of the Mi-4 Bison bombers. They in actual fact only produced a few dozen. There is an interesting story behind this :
During a 1950's May Day parade in Moscow, a formation of 4 Bison bombers flew over the parade again and again changing their formation each time once they were out of site. To US observers this looked like a waves of bombers passing over the parade not just 4.

So back to the thread the Genie would not have been used singly but most probably in volleys, which would have destroyed many bombers if the force was the size the US thought it was.

hmm i wonder what would happen if it was a h-bomb instead of a a-bomb?

The blast would take out many Russian bombers. When the missle is detonated there will be a shockwave and EM pulse which will take out any bomber
