Yeah, and what happens when the "gangs" move on from that to a crucifix?

And what is exactly illegal if you want to wear a "gang sign"? Could you trademark it and then it'd be fine?

I agree with you. This kind of thing wont happen in mine either without myself making the solid attempt to prevent it.

It is beyond me how any child can be arrested for wearing a religious symbol at an after school game. That simply amazes me and i don't understand why everyone simply allowed this to happen!

a rosary has been a symbol/tool used in Christianity a solid thousand plus years longer than any gang member started wearing one! And this is the first I have heard of it... You cannot prevent every single christian from wearing a symbol of Christianity just because one or two gangs wore those same symbols too!

That is absolutely ludicrous!

I agree with people when they say they feel like it is becoming illegal to be a christian in this country! First the pastors in Houston have to submit their sermons for governmental review, now a child is arrested for wearing a rosary! I cannot believe all this!

Indeed (:

Really though, if the higher ups...or lower downs, or whatver, had any sense, they'd probably have had a bit of pause, when most assuredly, that didn't even cross their minds.

This is ridiculous. Just as I said it should be fine for the Sikh to wear a dagger provided it's under his clothes as part of his faith I see no problem with this student wearing a rosary. It shouldn't be on display either because then it's more of a fashion statement than an adherence/reminder of faith but forcing the kid to remove it is going way overboard.

some street gangs do use the rosary as a symbol
they also usually have a statue of santa muerte and a picture or statue of the virgin mary

(apart from that certain religious groups do fit the description of a gang much more than they do that of a spiritual organization)

for wearing an item in a manner which is considered to be gang related

you know i hear ALL gang members wear shirts, and pants, those ought to be banned as well, then again they all have skin, time for the mass skinning!

The gang my friend is religion, they have tarnished the image of Islam with Isis and have been trying to do to Christianity. It's all pre programming. Schools not allowing prayers or even god bless after a sneeze. Not allowing nativity scenes on people's private lawns during the holidays.
It's will get far worse as time progresses.

I'm looking at that picture and what I see is a teenage boy in Texas, who is probably a hispanic Catholic, at his school football game and doing nothing wrong. Church rules are that the rosary isn't supposed to be worn, but many devout people wear them anyways. If this young fella is devout enough to wear his rosary, then he'll probably be praying for the cop who harassed him.

Goddamn kids these days

Bringing religious items to school, what the hell is wrong them?

It's almost as if he thought there was religious freedom in this country.

Rosary beads have been used for a while by gangs. Usually they all are of one color or another, and are often worn around the neck. This is more prominent among those gangs where the members are all of Hispanic or Latino origins.

Most gangs will wear something in particular, similar to style and color. So those gangs that are just starting off, may have mismatched items that indicate they belong to one group. While those that have been around, usually have more slicker means of indicating such, including the same shoes, or head wear, or even jewelry. As such religious items are often used as part of that identification of such.

I don't see what the complication is. The kid is wearing something against the dress code. He's told to leave the property or not wear it. He chose option C, ignore the rule and resist arrest. Cop acts accordingly.

Found this story by KISS FM 96.9. Story

Here’s the information given to us by the Amarillo Police Department:
Police Statement:

A witness stated: “I’m amazed that you have to put up with this behavior.” to the officer.

School officials & the Amarillo Police Officer asked the teen to remove the rosary, hide it, or leave school property. Rosary beads have been concluded by national authorities and media to have gang affiliation roots.

The youth then began to use abusive language. The officer who was talking to him at the time (who happens to be Catholic) asked the teen “what are these beads for”, knowing that the beads are used for prayers. The youth replied: “What do you mean”. This showed the officer that they were not being worn for religious purposes.

School officials repeatedly asked and told him to leave the property. The officer warned that he would have to arrest him if he did not leave the property. The teen refused to leave property. After multiple warnings, the officer went to cuff the young man. At this point he began flailing, struggling, and they went to the ground.

The abusive language continued and the teen even spouted racist remarks against African American officer. The teen kept trying to break free and run. He was finally cuffed and the officer held him down until a field unit could arrive and transport him for booking.

The youth was booked on a criminal trespass charge & resisting arrest.

Where is it even legal for a cop to enforce a schools dress code? He doesnt have the legal authority to do that.

Also it is unconstitutional and so ILLEGAL for a school to make rules that infringe on his right to religious observance.

I would hope any rational person would defy this. I also hope this cop loses his job over this. He made up laws to fit his convenience. You think think the fact that this Hispanic kid was Hispanic had any bearing on his profiling as a possible gang member for wearing the same thing an Italian Catholic might carry?

Dress code violations for some dinky school validate forcing a KID to the ground? Removing his religious right to carry symbols of his faith is somehow American or something? Western, or even HUMAN?

Dude, what country do you want to live in?

Dont answer that. Just know, over our dead bodies.

EDIT TO ADD:
Rosaries arent gang symbols like army vets arent domestic terrorists. Please remove your head from your butt.

Hispanic gang members may carry them since in their culture they do anyways. Unless you are saying some fat old Mexican lady on her way to church is a gang banger...

If I was this kid I would threaten to dance on this cops grave with tap shoes. Hell, I would threaten to dig up his ancestors and ghost marry them to Charles Manson who I would also dig up for the ceremony. Who the hell does he think he is to act like a damn Nazi. If you act like a jerk you get the inner jerk in people. The language he may have dealt with is the least he should worry about. His own mindset seems to be perverted with delusions of dress code grandeur. This is ILLEGAL. End of story. Call a teacher or manager of the property HE IS A GUEST ON as well if this kids dress code violation is such an issue to him for what ever retarded reason.

You sir, are a hypocrite.
Call Americans cowards for just talking instead of acting, then proceed to offer nothing but a cheeky joke, then slam Americans for NO reason at all. I'm glad you hate America. Hopefully you keep your ignorance as far away as possible.
If you ever do decide to come here though, make sure you tell us all how you really feel about us.
I'm sure they will promptly show you who the coward is.
Your misplaced hate is born from ignorance and is sickening.
Also,
That kid should have tucked his rosary inside his shirt.
The cop should have had more patience. There is no reason he could not have talked that rosary off the kid.

I'm not Catholic, but from what I understand, you are not supposed to wear the rosary. The rosary isn’t jewelry; it’s a sacramental, which is an object meant to help bring about spiritual effects through the prayer or devotion it inspires. If this kid is so worried about his rights to religious observance, he should have know it's wrong to wear it in the first place. From what I read in the story, he wasn't even asked to take it off. He could've just tucked it into his shirt or put it in his pocket.

Clearly there is a reason why the school has this dress code. Apparently there is trouble with gangs there and many other schools and national authorities believe a person wearing the rosary openly means they could be gang affiliated.

"Dress code violations for some dinky school validate forcing a KID to the ground?"

No. It sounds like resisting arrest and acting like a punk forced the kid to the ground.
