An attempt on Viktor Yushchenko was made using a some form poison. Yushchenko was struck with disfiguring acne-like symptoms that were noticed world wide. Medical officials agree that this was a definite attempt on his life. Yushchenko is Ukraine�s opposition leader. The confirmation was reported by medical experts from Vienna�s Rudolfinerhaus clinic. Specialists from the United States, Great Britain, and France have helped to isolate the source of the form of poison be it a biological, chemical or some other rare exotic form. British toxicologist John Henry suggested that Yushchenko�s was suffering from dioxin poisoning which causes severe chloracne. Doctors are waiting for a final examination to conclude the results.

Doctors at Vienna�s exclusive Rudolfinerhaus clinic are within days of identifying the substance that left Mr Yushchenko�s face disfigured with cysts and lesions, Nikolai Korpan told The Times in a telephone interview.

Specialists in Britain, the United States and France had helped to establish that it was a biological agent, a chemical agent or, most likely, a rare poison that struck him down in the run-up to the presidential election, he said. Doctors needed to examine Mr Yushchenko again at the clinic in Vienna to confirm their diagnosis but were in no doubt that the substance was administered deliberately, he said.

�This is no longer a question for discussion,� Dr Korpan said. �We are now sure that we can confirm which substance caused this illness. He received this substance from other people who had a specific aim.�

Asked if the aim had been to kill him, Dr Korpan said: �Yes, of course.�

Proof that Mr Yushchenko was deliberately poisoned would be a devastating blow for his rival, the Prime Minister, Viktor Yanukovych, as the two candidates prepare for a repeat of a presidential run-off on December 26.

This was a definite attempt on the Ukrainian candidate�s life. This poison was simply injected or administered in drinking water or food. Doctors stated that after the final exam has been formed, the test could be wrapped up in as little as three days. Ironically, some have said, namely Kremlin officials who support Yanukovych, have said he dimply ate some bad sushi, which was one of the first reports that came out, or drank to much cognac. These same Yanukovych supporters have even gone so far as to say Yushchenko had a severe case of herpes. We�ll more than like know conclusively before the December 26 election as to the real truth of the case, medical experts are confident this was a deliberate act. It seems old habits die hard in the former Soviet Union. First try to poison the likely winner, and then rig the election anyway just in case. Democracy is very fragile.

Indeed, it seems like this came right out of the playbook of the former Soviet Union, where poisoning political competitors was not all that uncommon.

In those days, if your political rivals drank "to your good health" with a strange little smile on their faces, it was probably not a bad idea to decline the toast.

Apparently, this custom continues in the Ukraine.
